The standard measure runs from "Cover looks nice, let's open the book" to "I feel like I'm having a stroke". Typography is all about staying on the right side of that. It should barely be noticeable, let alone offensive and in the way. bsky.app/profile/symb...

(Robert Harper) 'Zeilberger calls this the pragmatist interpretation, following Count Basie’s principle, “if it sounds good, it is good.” ' ok so now I have a name and a citation for the old design/typography aphorism, "If it looks right, it is right."

BTW, besides being a great weekly, Die Zeit is one of the most exquisitely produced print newspapers I've ever seen. Typography, layout, graphics - all a thing of beauty.

I’m pretty sure cursive handwriting only existed in the first place because of the way pens worked in the olden days and became obsolete after ball points were invented, so this is sort of like forcing elementary school kids to use Courier font in their Word docs because that’s what typewriters had

cursive handwriting should not only be kept out of our schools, it should be illegal and completely banned. we don’t need two alphabets for one alphabet. Governor Shapiro needs to take my class and learn about Being Stupid™ the right way

🔥 Most AI Book Covers Fail — And It’s Not Because of AI Most creators think AI will automatically generate a “professional” book cover. 🔥 How Professionals Actually Use AI for Book Covers Instead of random prompts, professionals use #BookDesign #Psychology #ArtificialIntelligence #SelfPublishing
🔥 Most AI Book Covers Fail — And It’s Not Because of AI
Most creators think AI will automatically generate a “professional” book cover.
But reality is very different.
👉 The problem is not the AI tool.
👉 The problem is the prompt behind it.
Because in design, tools don’t create quality — instructions do.
And this is where 90% of people fail.
🧠 The Hidden Truth About AI Book Covers
When most people generate book covers using AI, they do something like this:
“Create a fantasy book cover”
“Make a professional ebook design”
“Beautiful cover design”
And then they expect premium results.
But AI doesn’t understand:
❌ genre psychology
❌ typography hierarchy
❌ emotional positioning
❌ marketing intent
So the output looks:
👉 random
👉 generic
👉 low-value
And worst of all:
👉 it doesn’t sell.
💡 What Professionals Do Differently
Professional designers don’t rely on simple prompts.
They use structured thinking:
✔ visual hierarchy
✔ emotional triggers
✔ genre-specific language
✔ marketing psychology
This is the real difference.
Because a book cover is not just art — it is:
👉 a sales tool
👉 a psychological trigger
👉 a click generator
⚡ The Psychology Behind a Bestselling Book Cover
Every successful book cover follows 3 hidden rules:
1️⃣ Instant Clarity
A viewer must understand:
👉 What genre is this?
👉 What emotion is this?
within 2 seconds.
2️⃣ Emotional Trigger
Great covers trigger emotions like:
curiosity
fear
desire
mystery
Emotion = attention.
3️⃣ Visual Authority
If a cover looks cheap → people assume the book is cheap.
That’s why design quality directly affects:
👉 trust
👉 clicks
👉 sales
🚀 The Real Reason AI Results Look “Bad”
AI is not the problem.
The real issues are:
❌ weak prompts
❌ no structure
❌ no design direction
❌ no psychological intent
AI simply follows instructions.
So if the instruction is weak → output is weak.
🔥 How Professionals Actually Use AI for Book Covers
Instead of random prompts, professionals use:
👉 structured prompt framework

i'm glad i saved a few shots for 500T's proper nighttime use, because... nice. this shot only needed the white/black point and a very minor color tweak. i'm curious how it will look with a flash. maybe daylight flat at full power, so reduce it for this look? Pentax KX - Vision3 500T #photography
wide night shot of P. Terry's, a drive-through burger joint. the building has a stylish angular mid-century look that has a trapezoidal teal main building with a red neon "P. TERRY'S" sign in a fat, casual sans-serif typeface. the building is half-shaded by a dramatic triangular overhang lined with zig-zagging tube lights and held up by big V-shaped red metal columns. several cars are lined up for the drive-through, warmly lit by the overhead lights contrasting the rest of the parking lot's cool lights.

Found others sharing their #napowrimo #blackoutpoetry (although mine is technically #whiteoutpoetry and the prompt was #redactionpoetry ) so I will, too. I used a digital process, with a delightful children's #ebook from the #library via #Libby
Ebook cover of We Are Definitely Human by X. Fang
The first page of the ebook, where I used a digital tool to white out the text I didn't need, leaving only the words

midnight
crashed
and
The back two pages of the ebook to show all the credits. Here are the highlights:

TUNDRA BOOKS

And the author's bio:

X. FANG is a visual artist,
a maker of books for young readers and DEFINITELY human. She enjoys very human things like breathing and eating the foods. In fact, her favorite foods is sauce. Dim Sum Palace, her debut picture book, received a starred review from Booklist and is the winner of the 2023 Society of Illustrators' Dilys Evans Founder's Award. Born on the Earth planet in the Milky Way Galaxy in a land called Taiwan, and raised in the American state of Georgia, she now lives in a strange and mysterious place called Maine with her human husband and a canine companion named Pamela.
My resulting poem reads:

FINITE

midnight
crashed
and
was
immediate

whispering
trees
describe
the
dark night
happily

somewhat odd
something unique

a little party
dancing
moving
fun
conversations

and time
disappeared among the stars.

4/18 pneuma day!!
a collage focused on rex from xenoblade chronicles 2 standing at a side profile, confidently starring at the third aegis sword he is holding up as it glows a strong blueish-green. behind him to our left is pneuma, holding a hand near her core crystal and her heart while making an eyes closed, open mouth expression to convey her general melancholy. in the background is the cloud sea, blue skies, and the world tree in the distance. the game title "XENOBLADE 2" is written in a bold, italic helvetica font running down white space (and around pneuma's hair and body) on the left side of the image
pneuma from xenoblade chronicles 2 curled up, floating through space. some glistening tears are coming from her eyes and starting to blend in with the bright stars and space dust
pneuma from xenoblade chronicles 2 with a surprised expression and a hand on cheek while holding a cup of splashing coffee. her ponytail is swaying in the background

🏀 RAPTORS GAMEDAY 🏀 The Raptors and the Cavs play in Game 1 of a best-of-7-series. Let's go Raptors! ⌚️ 1 pm ET 🏟 Rocket Arena, Cleveland, OH 🖥 SN 📻 SN590 AM #TorontoRaptors #WeTheNorth #NBAPlayoffs #raptorsvscavs
This image is a high-intensity sports graphic promoting an NBA playoff game. It features a dark, cinematic design with bold red and white accents.
## Visual Centerpiece
The poster features a prominent action shot of **Scottie Barnes**, a key player for the **Toronto Raptors**.
 * **Expression:** He is shown from the chest up, mid-shout with a wide-open mouth and an intense, celebratory expression.
 * **Attire:** He is wearing the Raptors' red and black jersey, which includes the Nike "swoosh" and a "Sun Life" sponsorship patch.
 * **Background:** The background is primarily black with stylized, jagged red streaks that look like claw marks or paint splashes, creating a sense of energy and aggression.
## Key Information
The text is organized at the top and bottom of the graphic in clean, white sans-serif fonts:
 * **Top Section:** * "2026 RAPTORS PLAYOFFS" (Presented by Tangerine).
   * "GAME 1 | ROUND 1" – indicating the start of the postseason.
 * **Bottom Section:**
   * **Matchup:** The Toronto Raptors logo (a clawed basketball) is on the left, and the Cleveland Cavaliers "C" logo is on the right, separated by the word "AT."
   * **Headline:** "GAMEDAY" in large block letters.
   * **Time & Date:** April 18 | 1:00 PM.
   * **Location:** Rocket Arena (Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland).
The overall mood is one of excitement and high stakes, typical of a professional basketball playoff launch.

This game is being broadcast in Canada on Sportsnet and SN590 am.

No Name No Color (2010) - Middle Class Rut. This band is probably remembered as a 1-hit wonder, which is a shame because they rule. The vocals are a bit like the Beastie Boyz except if they were a good rock group instead of a boring rap group with mediocre flow (😘). Their best work comes later, tho.
The album cover to No Name No Color by Middle Class Rut. It's a crinkled paper background. On top of it is a collage showing a human head. The head is made up of many shreds of pencil drawings of the two band members' faces, sewn together in the middle with pieces of red thread and metal staples. The head's left eye and cheek have been tinted orange-red. The head's right eye and cheek have been tinted teal blue. Below the head in a grungy black stencil font are the words "MIDDLE CLASS RUT" and below that in a plain black sans-serif font, smaller, the words "NO NAME NO COLOR"
