The most annoying thing ever is when some older person starts a convo about your job and then tries to help you find something new by going "well what do you like to do" as if that never dawned on anyone. I like to get paid. End of story.

Getting rid of special educators is quite difficult due to legal mandates around IEPs, I am still a bit worried that the economy could tank enough to get all the way to me. Our contract does have seniority written in but then its just, like, oh I'll be safe because they'll fire the young teachers.

I feel guilty because I was part of the bargaining unit that got seniority added. Of course this is mainly because a district will otherwise get rid of the teachers that cost the most, which is all the experienced ones. Still, it felt like negotiating against some of our members.

Yeah - it's also the reality for France/any Western country with an ageing population. That said, Britain's long-term productivity growth is really exceptionally low - that's where "Rejoin SM + CU" is the less imaginary solution than "Face down 50 years of encrusted domestic opposition".

I wish we'd stop equating "X years of experience" with some sort of skill level, there's so many people just coasting by on seniority... every place I've worked at that's been SANE has at least done some sort of practical challenge to actually measure skill during/before the interviews

Meh you sound like every older person with their "kids these days." People have been insulting the younger generation with "too coddled" and "spoiled" and "bratty" and "never ever struggled or failed" since the dawn of time. IMO you should really try to avoid falling into that trap.
