Having a beer on a very quiet Sunday and have some time to kill. Anyone want to #askanastronomer anything?

Travel day today. Perhaps it's time for #askanastronomer? Questions about interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, the latest on early galaxies, what's in the sky, or my newly held opinions on baseball very welcome. 🔭

Great #askanastronomer question! Depends where in the track you are, but maximum totality for a given eclipse depends on the Moon’s distance from Earth and (less so) on Earth’s distance from the Sun. If orbits were circular, eclipses would be nearly the same length.

What determines the duration of totality of a solar eclipse? (I was struck by the difference in length of totality of the 2026 and 2027 eclipses.)
