Parabalaenoptera was found in the Santa Cruz Mudstone at Bolinas, and Point Reyes in general, is a beautiful and rarely visited part of the CA coast - few know that there is such a large national park and wilderness barely more than an hour's drive away from downtown San Francisco! 🐬🦑🦖🧪

The fossil was formally published in 1997 - but not after College of Marin biologists responsible for the discovery and its initial preparation and study had both passed away; NHMLA paleontologist Larry Barnes carried the torch. Fossil is now at @calacademy.bsky.social. 🐬🦑🦖🧪

For #NationalFossilDay here is a cast on display of Parabalaenoptera baulinensis, a ~7-8 myo fossil rorqual whale from Marin County. Found in 1976 by College of Marin biologists at Bolinas, it took several years to collect, removing blocks of bone as they weathered naturally over 10 years. 🐬🦑🦖🧪

A huge thank you to Lee Elementary School in Salem, OR, for inviting us to share our knowledge about sea otters and kelp forest ecology with more than 300 students. We loved helping students discover how #seaotters play an important role in keeping our coastal ecosystems healthy and thriving.

7/ Some lovely water droplets collecting on the whiskers of this cute little sea lion pup (Zalophus californianus) 🐬🦑 #wildlifephotography #nature
A portrait of a wet sea lion pup with dark brown hair and long pale whiskers - there are many water droplets that are stuck onto the tips of the whiskers
