Cartoon of an angry man with a goatee and dark hair, arms stretched out and tied with ropes. His face shows a determined glare. On the right, a map marked “NEDERLAND” is visible with a target symbol. Subtitle text at the bottom reads: “Let’s see you wriggle your way out of this one, Stille Willem!”

At least two people were killed and five others wounded on Sunday in a shooting in Seattle. Police had taken one suspect into custody, Mayor Katie Wilson said. Information about that suspect or a potential motive was not immediately available. Read more: nyti.ms/4pHpnHd

So happy that I can finally get real work done with Opus 5 on the Pro plan — at least until Fable 5.1 comes out. Really great model. Makes some dumb mistakes, and the Claude Code harness/apps are terrible, but Anthropic is clearly winning on model performance.

I’m looking up stuff in 1970s issues of Creative Computing, and getting distracted by Monte Wolverton’s funny and prescient cartoons.
Vintage comic panel titled "Computer Myths Explained" showing scientists reacting in horror to a monstrous alien emerging from a computer.
Vintage comic "Computer Myths Explained" showing a chaotic robot computer doing all household chores simultaneously, pen-and-ink style.
Black and white comic illustration titled "Computer Myths Explained: Computerized Unemployment" by Monte Wolverton showing humans reduced to blobs of protoplasm in capsules connected to a giant computer.
1978 cartoon: bored man at computer displaying "YAWN," surrounded by unwashed dishes and laundry. Text debunks home computer myths.

my light trap brings all the bugs to the yard
A white sheet illuminated by bright white and blue UV light at night, covered with dozens of insects attracted to the light trap. The sheet is suspended between a metal frame, with the brightest white light on the left side transitioning to blue light on the right. Dark silhouettes of insects are scattered across the entire surface. Equipment and a chair are visible on the left side of the setup against a black night sky.

Happy friend-iversary to my Faceball buddy @zarithya.online!! Ten years (and two days) ago in an absolutely insane coincidence, we were standing next to each other, taking pictures of the Nintendo PlayStation at the exact same time! 6 years later we’d meet again through Faceball!
July 24 2016 at 12:08 pm, at the (now defunct) Seattle Retro Convention. Zari and I were both looking at the then-recently discovered Nintendo PlayStation prototype. And we took these pictures at the exact same time. On the left is my picture on my phone and the right is her picture on her computer. We discovered this after we’d uploaded our Faceball videos or else we would’ve mentioned this insane coincidence.
October 2022 at the Portland Retro Convention, “Cool Jacket Girl” aka Zari appears as we first attempted 16-player Faceball 2000. Unknowingly, we’d already met before, albeit briefly, 6 years earlier.
Seattle Retro Gaming Expo badges from 2017 and 2016. It was always a much smaller convention compared to Portland and other retro cons. I was hoping it would’ve grown to something bigger so I would have something I could go to without having to travel. But it’s been defunct for I guess about a decade now.

A large stack of timber logs with dark weathered bark sits in dense forest, viewed through a gap in surrounding green foliage and tree branches. Two vultures perch atop the logs. Dappled sunlight filters through the canopy, illuminating the lush vegetation framing the scene.

The battle against Ebola remains a staggering challenge around the Ituri Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the camps housing more than a million Congolese who have been displaced by violence are a stark example. nyti.ms/4whYnRc
