I've just had to explain this to a shitload of my white brethren. That their birthplaces informed their "knowledge" (ignorance) of Juneteenth is not surprising, yet profoundly disappointing.

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved people in Texas finally learned they were free when Union troops arrived in Galveston to enforce emancipation.

Happy Juneteenth! The day where slaves in Texas were finally told they were "free"...TWO YEARS LATER. Slavery was still going on less than 200 years ago and it still affects us to this day.

Happy Juneteenth everyone! Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved people there were free, two+ years after the Emancipation Proclamation had legally freed slaves in Confederate states. Justice was slow then too.

Juneteenth serves as a powerful reminder that the fight for freedom, equality, and justice is a continuous journey.  While the Supreme Court actively works to dismantle the Voting Rights Act and the achievements of the Civil Rights Movement, we won’t give up the fight for civil rights. 🙏🏻💙
