Exciting to watch the historic NASA Artemis II launch yesterday! I had the honor of meeting these inspiring astronauts a few years ago, and I look forward to following their journey around the moon. This launch is a reminder to us all to shoot for the moon & dream big! 🚀🌙
Senator Murray is on the left of the frame in a light purple pantsuit, looking to the left and talking to four people in blue astronaut suits.
Senator Murray is standing center frame with two people in blue astronaut suits on each side. Everyone is posed, smiling, and looking at the camera.

#ArtemisII Fun facts: When Artemis launched, it took 7 seconds to push over 8 million lbs straight up to clear its 380ft launch tower. This means Artemis was travelling at 100mph by the time it cleared the tower! It broke the sound barrier (760mph, Mach 1) in 56 seconds. Just incredible.

Artemis II isn’t just setting the absolute altitude record for when they fly over the far side of the Moon in a few days, they’ve also set the altitude record for Earth-orbit. There actually was a planned “high-Earth orbit” Apollo mission but it was cancelled in favor of Apollo 8 going circumlunar.

So beautiful and humbling to see Earth from this perspective. 41,800 miles (67,200 km) from our planet--the view from Artemis II. 🧪

#Artemis II - The morning routine in space. Now they're awake, the crew will likely begin their morning routine with personal hygiene. Due to the lack of a shower, astronauts use wipes, "no-rinse" soap & water on washcloths to stay clean, toothpaste needs to be swallowed or spat into a towel. 1/2

To celebrate the launch of Artemis II 🚀, I put together a #cssonly scroll-driven animation. Powered by animation-timeline: scroll — no JavaScript, just modern CSS. Still WIP, but already a fun experiment. Full demo on @codepen.iocodepen.io/cbolson/full... #artemis

Is Artemis II going "to the moon?" Is Artemis II going "around the moon?" Does it even matter? Is this not all just pedantic nonsense? So hello hi I wrote a thing about the nerd drama du jour and actually I think it reveals something that really does matter about #scicomm 🧪🔭

Technically correct is not, in fact, the best kind of correct in scicomm

Artemis II is currently in an elliptical orbit around the Earth, with a perigee (closest point to Earth) of about 115 miles, and an apogee (farthest point) of 43,760 miles. By comparison, the ISS is about 250 miles up.
