Iran urges Russia and China to block US efforts at the UN Security Council
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called on Russia and China to uphold the principles of the UN Charter and prevent the United States from âusing the Security Council to escalate tensions and commit crimes against Iran.â
Araghchi made the remarks during a phone call with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. âThe parties discussed the latest developments in the region and the consequences for security amid the military aggression of the United States and Israel against Iran,â Iranâs Mehr News Agency reported .
In the conversation with Lavrov, Araghchi stressed Iranâs determination to continue defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He said: âAny threats to attack Iranâs energy infrastructure constitute a clear war crime and an act of genocide.â
He warned that if such threats are carried out, Iranâs response would be âswift and decisive.â
Iranâs top diplomat also pointed to what he described as the consequences of a war imposed by the United States and the âZionist regimeâ for shipping security in the Strait of Hormuz.
He rejected accusations against Iran and said instability in the strait was âa direct result of the illegal attacks by the United States and Israel.â
Araghchi called on the international community to hold those countries accountable âfor violations of international law and the crimes committed.â
The Iranian foreign minister also expressed regret over the position of several countries, including Bahrain, which he said support US policy and use the UN Security Council to pressure Iran.
He described the March 11 resolution, which âin the strongest termsâ condemns Iranâs âflagrant attacks against neighboring countries,â as a gross distortion of reality because it places responsibility on Iran rather than on the parties he considers the aggressors.
Araghchi also condemned an initiative by the United States and several of its allies to push for a similar resolution at the UN Security Council.
He stressed that Security Council member states â above all Russia and China, as well as other countries that adhere to the principles of the UN Charter and international law â must not allow the United States to use the Security Council to worsen the situation.
Lavrov, for his part, condemned what he called the âillegal attacksâ by the United States and Israel against Iran.
He also highlighted the close relationship between Moscow and Tehran and said Russia is consistently working in international forums to defend international law and prevent its erosion.
