#snakeweek This poor water #snake (Nerodia sp.) was relatively plagued by blood sucking #inverts (Shot near Cincinnati 7-9-25) 🐍 #photography #wildlifephotography #wildlife #nature #animal #reptile #herps #parasites 🦟
A very large, old, and nearly patternless Common water snake (Nerodia sp.) is shot in profile facing the right of frame while resting on a mossy log. In the left of frame we can see a bit of their tail doubling back behind behind them. If you look closely at their head you can spot a little mosquito near their snout.
The same common water snake (Nerodia sp.) shot mostly in profile on the same mossy log this time facing the left of frame. Most of their body is coiled a bit behind them with their tail trailing off into the center of the background. If you follow their neck back, you may notice a leach of some sort on their body.

The trap didn't contain much this morning. The numbers have noticeably decreased. This Brown-tail, who was NFY, was the only moth of any significance. #teammoth #mothsmatter

A cluster of yellow eggs, some with tiny black heads visible as the minute first instar caterpillar prepares to emerge. There are some empty, partially eaten white shells. Several yellow caterpillars with black heads and white spikes along their bodies crawling on the nasturtium leaf or on the bodies of their siblings
At the right of this shot is an out of focus clump of eggs surrounded by empty shells. Central is another cluster of eggs and at the bottom of the clump is a brownish red and white insect which in other shots was seen eating the eggs. I do not know what this insect is.
Another enemy, this time a 7 Spot Ladybird happily feeding on the eggs. There are several larger caterpillars bottom right and above the eggs 3 yellow first instar. Centre right is a cluster of brown circles, probably/possibly where eggs were laid, the caterpillars emerged and all the shells eaten.
A healthy looking clump of green and yellow with dark spots 2nd instar. When they are 4th instar I'll bring a few home and raise them

First #teammoth -ing opportunity for a bit and jumped at it despite 20-30mph gusts. Steady as you go with 129/43 and some nice NFG in 7NFY: Sallow kitten, Hypatima rhomboidella, and nationally-scarce White-line snout. Face-plant specialist Catoptria falsella always welcome too!
Sallow kitten : a moth wearing a striped jumper like my grandma used to knit
White-line snout: rare mini snout species (macro-moth).
Hypatima rhomboidella : Black rhomboid grey is another rare moth in these parts
Catoptria falsella, brown micromoth in characteristic head down posture.

My chaotic art space (and safe space.) Yes, I need to organise my shelves, and I still have 2 boxes to unpack in the corner after moving here two months ago. #art #drawing #insects #sketchbooks #snails
A desk on the left with a noticeboard above. Notice board is filled with drawings of snails, insects and fungi, and photos of Molly the cat. 2 sketchbooks are opened. There are pen stands, tins, lights and mushrooms decorations. To the right are open shelves. A yellow octopus plush sits on top beside a yellow lamp. Don’t worry, he’s friendly. The shelves have a camera, books, boxes, sketchbooks and novelty rubber ducks.

Catoptria verellus (Marbled Grass-moth) was a good addition to the garden moth list recently. I’ve recorded this species a couple of times previously in Devon and suspect it may be locally (and maybe temporarily) established. #teammoth

Sunset trip to the forest preserve provided plenty of opportunities to enjoy flora and fauna. #sunset #insects #nature #photography #macrophotography @thephotohour.bsky.social
Close-up shot of a blue dasher dragonfly that has perched on a dried up flower. Its eyes are multicolored blue and green, the abdomen has stripes has and its thorax is a blue/gray shade that is segmented. Purple bee balm flowers are vaguely visible in the background.
A garter snake that had climbed a milkweed plant and was presumably looking for a meal from its vantage point. Its scales are black on top of its back and head and the sides have yellow and black bands. It was probably at least a foot long.
Close-up shot of a honey bee on milkweed flowers. The mottled coloration of its eye is visible. The abdomen is fuzzy and is a very pale yellow. The thorax is a brighter, orangish yellow with some black bands. These milkweed blossoms are very fragrant.
It’s late in the day so the sun is low on the horizon and there are dramatic clouds. This is a close-up of a yellow flower with the sun shining through it and sharply illuminating the silhouette. The rainbow circle at the bad if the flower is a lens flare from the camera being pointed towards the sun.
