I'm not making any judgements. I'm trying to learn. I've recently gotten engaged in a gaming event group where there's a lot of 5e being played and I want to understand. Feels a lot more like fantasy superheroes than D&D. My regular group is in Shadowdark. Personally I'm solidly OSR.

Having read through Shadowdark, it's quite interesting in that unlike other dungeonslops it appears to be branching from D&D5e into something streamlined instead of branching D&D1e and modernising it.
Inspiration points (luck) are still a thing. Yet Vancian casting and darkvision are gone.

Out of the five TTRPG I really wanted to play in 2025 I managed to play three. That's not bad in my book.
I also played some Shadowdark, Brindlewood Bay and of course D&D.

So, I picked up Shadowdark yesterday and spent some time with it this morning.
Itās ā¦ fine. Well put together and reasonably coherent, but a bit underwhelming in some ways.
Happy to play it, but itās definitely not my āgrailā Fantasy TTRPG.
Not sure such a thing exists or whether I need to make it.

These days there are a lot of LGBT folks in the OSR and its become more conscious of its negative past as a scene, but a lot of those bad actors are still there too. You kinda have to do some research just to know whats up. If you're curious, I recomend Dragonbane, Shadowdark, and Black Hack.

There has been a push within that space to distance themselves from a lot of those voices and take a more "inspired by" approach, studying the designs and making games with more modern philosophies that evoke those dark fantasy themes and high risk gameplay, like Cairn, Shadowdark, etc.

There wasn't much I didn't recognise this year, which took me by surprise because I'm feeling very out of the RPG loop ATM. Lots and lots (and lots and lots and lots) of horror, and some interesting near future sci fi, and it was nice to see Shadowdark and Break with a big presence.
