But make no mistake: layoffs, as opposed to games, are the most notable thing coming out of Ubisoft these days. The company started its year with cuts at Star Wars Outlaws studio Massive Entertainment and the closure of Assassin's Creed: Rebellion developer Ubisoft Halifax—the latter of which had just unionized—and never really let up. The reaper’s scythe has also hit, among others, Ubisoft Barcelona (which also worked on Resynced), Ubisoft Paris, Ubisoft Red Storm, Ubisoft Winnipeg, and Ubisoft Belgrade.

The near-constant bloodletting is in service of an increasingly convoluted restructuring program that has seen the publisher’s dwindling collection of studios divided into “creative houses” focused on specific genres and series—one of many byproducts of a $1.25 billion bailout from Tencent that kept the flailing Guillemot family in charge of the business it's clearly no longer fit to run. Another byproduct? Plans to cut Ubisoft’s costs by €200 million before March 2028. In response to the chaos, workers have organized large-scale strikes and other actions. But so far they’ve only managed to gum up the gears of Ubisoft’s layoff machine, not grind it to a halt.
