I went as far as removing all Ring and Echo based hardware and moved the security to a local based system using ReoLink. No cloud subscription and I own the hardware and it is even open to Home Assistant (to a point). We have choices, we need to start using them. F*ck corporations.

You can totally do that with Home Assistant. It doesn't do anything you don't want it to. It's a surprisingly good piece of software and it's free and open source!

Security camera audio plus BirdNET-Go has quietly become the default pipeline for backyard wildlife tracking. Commenters traded setups feeding RTSP streams from UniFi and Reolink gear straight into Home Assistant to classify calls in real time. #ai 1/4

要聽見我家門鈴聲,得靠 5 項雲端服務 blog.vghaisas.com/rube-go…

And yes of course it is way more attractive on the business side to keep data, so that also means it happens first. Consumers will happily take more private alternatives when they are as featureful, integrated and easy, but they aren’t. Home Assistant is great but still too complex for most people.

BirdNet-Go is a self-hosted, local AI tool that repurposes existing security cameras to identify birds, bats, and other wildlife in real time. The system runs on Docker without cloud dependencies, offering privacy, customizable alerts, and integration with Home Assistant.

I turned three security cameras into an automatic bird identification system using BirdNet-Go. Now my wife and I can track every bird species that visits our yard in real-time.

Apparently mentioning using a local LLM upset someone earlier. I use Home Assistant. I repurposed literal e-waste and built a rig to host an LLM in docker along with the Wyoming Protocol connected to a smart speaker that controls smart home devices all locally. No cloud, no microphone spying on you

It was a fun project. Tough myself a Linux distro (Pop OS). Taught myself how to use docker. Learned how to write my own update script for Wyoming Protocol in my docker. Used the chat bot to help write complex Home Assistant automations in YAML when I got stuck or something wasn't working correctly.

Päivän (no, vähän yönkin) Home Assistant: laitoin esp32-s3:lla bluetooth proxyn kuuntelemaan auton laturia, josta saan samalla koko talon energiankulutustiedot. Mahdollistaa monia juttuja. Aika hankalaa oli tavan turapallille, mutta onnistui lopulta!
