It is trivial to understand why declines in asset prices are bad, especially ones that are highly levered. The optimal policy would be flat to small nominal price increases, but more importantly at a rate less than income growth so the real price of housing goes down as a total share of income.

Mark Zuckerberg built a massive data center in Georgia just hundreds of yards from people’s homes. Now the water pressure is gone. Sinks don’t run. Toilets won’t refill. Homes shake nonstop. Power outages are routine.

This is the needle threading I’m trying to achieve in my conversations. “The rent is too high” connects with everyone because it doesn’t assign blame for why, so everyone agrees.
If I talk about our society being in an existential democratic crisis the conversation turns into “how do you know?”

During Biden years it was "no you're wrong the economy is great-look at this chart of rising wages". People aren't that stupid.

I worked in a soup kitchen in urban Texas that served lunch. About half the people we served were homeless; the other half were working (many in their uniforms on lunch break) and had dubious housing arrangements.
