BREAKING NEWS: Negin Mirzaei Damabi has officially submitted their thesis! After countless hours of research, questionable sleep schedules, and probably enough caffeine to qualify as a scientific experiment, Negin has finally hit SUBMIT. Congratulations, Negin! #PhDone #Thesis

As is their wont NNSA way overdid the b(6) (privacy) & b(7) (security) redactions. I will write a post sometime & NNSA description of b(7) exemptions can cover almost anything no matter how banal IME. surprised 💣Bomb Threat Call ✔️list made it in. #PhDLife #FOIAsky "caller's exact words" lol
Screenshot from a (poorly) scanned document and this page reads "Bomb Threat Call- Check List" in large black font at the top of the page.

The next two lines, in smaller font are labeled "Date and time call received" and "exact words of caller" with empty lined space for answers.

The next line in larger text reads "signal someone to listen in, if possible" and then instructs the reader to "ask"

"1. Where is the bomb? Exactly. 2. When will it go off? 3. What does it look like? 4. What kind of bomb is it? 5. Why was it put there? 6. Who are you? 7. Where are you?" after each question there is space to respond.

The sheet then instructs the reader to "record" sex, tone of voice, any notable "accent or impediment,' "intoxicated?," background noises, if the voice is familiar and who it sounds like, and "remarks."

Then the reader, in larger font, is instructed to "NOTIFY" and "REPORT THE CALL IMMEDIATELY TO SECURITY AND YOUR SECTOR CHIEF DO NOT DISCUSS THE CALL WITH OTHER PERSONNEL EXCEPT YOUR SUPERVISOR"

Your methods chapter isn’t about hitting a page target; it’s about clear, reproducible steps. Aim for 10–12 pages in an 80‑page dissertation, then trim any redundant detail—every procedure must map to a hypothesis. #academicwriting #PhDLife

J.A. Jablonski | Resolute Death out Oct 28! @jajablonski.bsky.social · about 9 hours ago
📢 Hey #AcademicSky & #PhDSky If you're need a break but still love the scene (I know, I've been where you are now!), consider my #AcademicMystery, RESOLUTE DEATH. Intricate plot & nuanced characters, not to mention a gorgeous campus. Info here: jajablonski.com/books (& description in alt-text).
Front and back cover of Resolute Death by J.A. Jablonski. Original art: Stephen Richards. Front is a presentation. Against an all-white background, is a large black raven in flight. All-caps, dark red title is set midway on the cover. Text below in a small, black serif font reads "An Osley College Novel." Below that, in a dark red font matching the title is the author's name.

The back cover shows more of Richards' design: black and grey, ink-wash drawings of tree trunks against a white background. Superimposed is the book description/blurb: a roughly, dark-red outlined box enclosing the book's description:

"Resolute Death offers an intense, immersive tale with masterful plotting. An essential read for those who love an intricately woven mystery that highlights loss, memory, retribution, and found family.

When a glamorous music professor is found dead in the carillon tower of Osley College, a small liberal arts college in the Driftless Region of western Wisconsin, Maude Ascham, the new chief of campus police, has her hands full. Her investigation leads to porn-watching students, an angry boyfriend, a betrayed lover, and feuding colleagues. Students, faculty, and staff: all are implicated. When the Dean of Libraries commits a gruesome suicide three weeks later, the investigation becomes more than a matter of murder.

Who is blackmailing James North, the bereaved, ex-hobo English professor and celebrated poet? Why would someone destroy the 175-year-old bonsai of the cantankerous college gardener? Was last December’s drowning of a senior music student really an accident? And what of Ariel Ellis, the eccentric, blue-haired barista, who is clearly hiding something behind their theatrical banter; and Esha Larkin, the maps librarian seen weeping on the old library’s roof at dawn? Each appears to hold a vital piece of a dangerous puzzle. There is a killer on campus . . . can they be stopped?"

Is there anything more disheartening as a researcher to post your study on LinkedIn and five minutes later have to take the post down as it's been swarmed by bots? #phdlife #academicsky Lovely #musicsky #musicscience folks please would you help promote my study here for me instead?

Extremely cool postdoctoral fellowship opportunity with one of the all-time greats in the field, Dr. Eric Miller at the University of Toronto. Help take transportation modelling to the future by giving bicycles the attention they deserve in our quantitative models! #BikeTO #BikeSky #PhDSky
Active Travel Analysis & Planning Using an Advanced Activity/Travel Demand Model System: A Postdoctoral Fellow Opportunity

The University of Toronto Transportation Research Institute (UTTRI, https://uttri.utoronto.ca/) is seeking a postdoctoral fellow (PDF) to play a leading role in a two-year Canadian Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Alliance-Advantage project. The project involves: developing new models of bicycle route and mode choice; implementing these models in an advanced, operational agent-based microsimulation activity/travel demand forecasting system for the Greater Toronto-Hamilton Area (GTHA); and using this model system to develop effective bicycle policies and infrastructure for improving sustainable and equitable accessibility and mobility within the region. The PDF will work under the supervision of Prof. Eric Miller, cosupervised by Profs. Shoshanna Saxe and Timothy Chan.

The successful candidate must have demonstrated strong experience in discrete choice modelling and, more generally, travel demand modelling. Experience in bicycle modelling and planning is desirable, as is experience with machine learning methods. The candidate must have strong communication and project management skills, and be able to work effectively in a team environment.

The University of Toronto is consistently ranked in the top 20-25 universities in the world. The Toronto metropolitan region is the largest in Canada and has consistently been the fastest growing major North American urban region, providing an excellent “living laboratory” for
studying urban dynamics and policy formation.

Applicants should submit their CV, graduate school transcripts and a one-page (maximum) statement of qualifications and interest in the position by email to Prof. Eric Miller, eric.miller@utoronto.ca. International applications are welcome, but the applicants must have completed their PhD within five years of their appointment date.
