🛶 Toni Morrison: “The source of my unease reading this amazing, troubling book now seems clear; an imperfect coming to terms with three matters Twain addresses—Huck Finn’s estrangement, soleness and morbidity as an outcast child; the disproportionate sadness at the center of Jim’s and his…

Today’s 🛶 thoughts which are actually more Deep Space Nine notes oops. (I know the feed is down but in my head this convo happens with the canoe people, so here we are)

Ok in today’s DS9/Huck Finn crossovers: in s1e3 (obvs I am rewatching these in order pls), Odo is almost lynched by a mob. Also there’s about to be some civilizing school stuff thanks to Keiko.

Well, nothing for grief like a distraction, so I’ll take my KY-kid Dolly feels and channel them into Huck for a while. Chs 26-31 🛶 “all sorts of little knickknacks and jimcracks around, like girls brisken up a room with.” This is just delightful wording.

Ch 21-25: Huck finally seeing the king and duke’s tricks as horrible. Still thinking he knows what’s best for Jim (not admitting those two aren’t royalty). Jim is trapped on the raft a lot, I don’t blame him for being tired of those two. 🛶

🛶 OH BOY. I enjoyed most of the article up to the end: “The disappearance of “Huck Finn” is a worrisome sign that wrestling with a difficult book and emerging with one’s thoughts invigorated is no longer a given in the high school classroom.” 💩💩💩

🛶 Decided to rewatch Deep Space Nine and when we first meet teen Jake Sisko, he’s fishing in a holodeck pond and he is dressed like Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn?! And now I am distracted by DS9 as having a Twain touchstone? and TS/HF having the same visual iconography?

Since we're talking about Twain skewering our pretenses and hypocrisies, I have to commend to y'all his "Letters from the Earth". Written late in his life. Worth reading at least the preamble and first two or three. 🛶 sacred-texts.com/aor/twain/le...

🛶 Huck talking about Jim mourning his family. A theory of mind of Jim beginning to slowly, slowly coalesce in Huck’s mind.

🛶 8/23, HF, ch. 21-25: much-reduced Shakespeare; try that in a small town; royals vs. greenhorns; give ‘em the old razzle-dazzle. A short history of the carpet-bag(ger). Twain’s mention of royal luggage has layers.

Good stuff here; thank you, @abbaetha.bsky.social. HF is a post-Civil War/-Reconstruction novel! I hope we talk more about this as we enter the last chapters. Re-upping this terrific resource. 🛶

🛶 Funny thought: What would the modern version of the Grangerford home contain, and why would it include Live, Laugh, Love signage? Reading this description again, I am struck by how much Huck notices—and the disparity between the show of propriety and the acts of brutality. Great clock, too bad

The mothers and Jim see the baby as a person, Solomon and Huck see it as property, and given that Jim himself is seen as property, he knows better than that! Such a great Twain is not Huck moment 🛶
