In this dramatic illustration, gunners of the 37th Battery, Royal Field Artillery rescue a QF 4.5-inch howitzer under heavy German fire at the Battle of Le Cateau, France on 26 August 1914. Captain Douglas Reynolds and a team of volunteers valiantly retrieved one of their artillery pieces, resulting in the award of three Victoria Crosses.

Captain Reynolds VC was later promoted to major, and died in February 1916 from wounds received in a gas shell explosion. He is buried in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery at Etaples, France.

@thegreatwargroup.bsky.social #FWWhist #History #1GM #FWW #Grande-Guerre #WW1 Remembering another atrocity, committed 112 years ago today: not as large as Dinant (676 killed), Tamines (374) or Ethe (277) but the 122 assassinated from Rossignol was another horrific crime. (See alt text for details)

The 122 (mainly from Rossignol) were taken hostage following the battle there, as the Germans set fire to the houses. 24/08 they were herded into the “Camp de la Misére”, just N of Rossignol with the 3eDIC POWs

The next day at 16.00 they were escorted the 3km to Marbehan station and put in rail wagons, bound for Arlon, where on 26/08 Colonel von Tessmar ordered their execution

Around 10.00am, Oberst. von Hoering, in charge of the execution, ordered the prisoners down from the wagons, 10 at a time and they were shot near the pont de Schoppach

Buried in Arlon, after the war the bodies were reinterred in a mausoleum at Rossignol, in the presence of the King
