anyway all of this is to say i think it's hilarious that this leads to a situation where stede and izzy both call him ed to his face but normally use blackbeard when talking to everyone else INCLUDING EACH OTHER

izzy of course also considers being on a first-name basis with blackbeard a privilege he guards jealously, to the extent that i think he only ever says "blackbeard" in the third person AND very memorably gets mad at the crew for calling him edward even at his invitation in s1.

anyway, all of that is to say, i think stede does think of "blackbeard" as...more public-facing, for when he's talking about ed in the third person, in most circumstances? unless he's specifically trying to emphasize ed's humanity.

he also says ed when talking to anne & mary, but they're also calling him ed in the third person in those conversations, so it would be pretty weird for stede to insist on blackbeard there. (jack otoh never calls him ed so stede mostly doesn't either, except when they actually talk about the name.)

...but it's mostly in scenes involving the crew being mad about the kraken stuff - "ed just sat up too quickly," "the whole banishment of ed thing," "party supplies on ed" - so stede's specifically trying to humanize ed there to encourage them to forgive him. wouldn't make sense to say blackbeard.

the exceptions are pretty prominent though - for one thing, during the big separation it's ed almost 100% of the time. which makes sense because "where's blackbeard?" on the revenge would just sound inappropriately sort of stilted compared to the level of emotion. might as well be "captain teach."

obviously stede never calls ed blackbeard to his face except in very specific situations like "you can't be blackbeard without your black beard." but i think it's actually the norm for him to say blackbeard when talking about ed in the third person to other people, with specific exceptions.

ok so i do think what stede says to izzy in 2x05 is 100% flattery. and you are not the first person i've heard suggest that stede saying "blackbeard" instead of "ed" is one of the tells. but actually i don't think it is!
