Nushell is... It's so different and so interesting. It's like if Powershell wasn't riddled with compromise and the weird gatekeep-y vision of senior Microsoft folks.

I just wish there was a good .NET SSH client *and* server library so I could support spawning simple PowerShell SSH servers. I wouldn't be surprised if Claude Opus 4.5 could do it, but that would mean heavily modifying Tdms.Ssh. it could be fun to try just to see if it can be made to work

Those of you playing at home the AD issue has been resolved! And I didn't have to use PowerShell (it would have help but I am PowerShellLess)

What's cooking? PowerShell Remoting over SSH, in pure .NET, without the OpenSSH client. And yes, it can interactively prompt for credentials or accept them as input for automation 👇

Actually it's much better than the dream. Cross-compatibility is the reality. When you combine this with PowerShell's rich feature set and the ability to write any language in PowerShell, you end up with a really compelling case to start scripting cross-platform.

Adding a notch more context. I daily drive #PowerShell on a #RaspberryPi nowadays. I've been building PowerShell scripts since the start. I'm constantly amazed by how few code changes are required. Unless it's a Windows specific script, it'll probably work just fine on Linux and MacOS.

Aside from the apologies for the confusion to @cassidoo.co , I don't think I can offer too much hope here. IMO: 1. PowerShell being cross-platform is a good thing. 2. Dropping the "Windows" part of the name is also a good thing. 3. Remerging everything would be a mess of little value.

I don't have any blockers so no need for me. Just curious and thank you for sharing the insights. Would be great to move everything to open source PowerShell then @cassidoo.co never runs into this 😂. And Windows can standardize on open source PowerShell

Awesome. Curious, what is keeping the code bases split? Last time I tried to run something that was specific to WinPwsh (I think it was WMI-related) it only worked on WinPwsh, not open source PowerShell. I was assuming some library or dependency couldn't in older dotnet couldn't be open sourced

Get-CimInstance does _most_ of this. If you really want, I could try to rewrite Get-WmiObject for .NET core (please ask nicely and be patient) (IIRC the .Net libraries for WMI were never ported to core, but the Com objects still exist) (I worked on WMI before I worked on PowerShell)

Oh, we did. Problem was the way early .NET handled dependencies. Problem didn't get "fixed" until .NET core, which came out a few years after PowerShell. Once .NET core had all of the parts PowerShell needed, it went crossplatform. Had always been the plan. Just took a while to get there.

Or still don't want to open some of the libraries or code that makes Windows PowerShell different? I know things like WMI (or maybe it's something else Windows-specific) work on Windows PowerShell and not Open Source Pwsh.. Just wish it could be better

I follow both of those reasons.. But Microsoft didn't have the foresight to build Windows PowerShell in a way to make Open Source PowerShell possible..

Because Windows PowerShell (5.1) is built on .NET Framework 4.5 and PowerShell (7.x) is built on .NET Core. The amount of stuff that is built on Windows PowerShell and .NET Framework 4.5 is insane, and backwards-compatibility is important to them.

I mean I make a few additional langs atop PowerShell, but I wouldn't call any of them a secret, third PowerShell ( yet )

I'm working on a PowerShell script to automate converting .pub files to .pdf. Looks okay so far. Not ideal but better than losing everything.

Open source PowerShell has existed since 2016 and is considered the main one everyone should use, yet every Windows ships with the legacy (Windows PowerShell) because... Why?

ahhhh, coitus me!!! looks like LSP on a DC is wacky (actual technical term :) ) I have zero bandwidth for this today!😩 Canon guy up my derriere with his installation date and Verizon being a-holes! I just want to go back to sleep today! (another instance where knowing PowerShell would be helpful)

I guess that makes sense. Would guess that the lower the level of the code, the fewer ways there are to do something. I’ve been using it to assist with Powershell cmdlets, and when I’ve shown people they have pointed out that there are existing cmdlets that could be used to make it more efficient
