Nvidia serves as the backbone to this 2K-word, palpably ambivalent WSJ story about Trump's "state capitalism." But the story never tells the reader that China issued guidance to avoid the Nvidia chips after Trump approved the sale. www.wsj.com/politics/pol...
But unlike Biden, Trump has asserted that Washington should extract value from private companies that need its help. The administration has taken stakes in companies with which it has arranged contracts and loans to boost the supply of critical minerals. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum told the Journal Friday those stakes will initially be held by a sovereign-wealth fund.

Trump converted the Intel grant to equity. Despite the dilution to existing shareholders, Intel shares rose. Investors are betting the federal government would steer business to Intel, much as Beijing does for its national champions.

Huang’s and Sacks’ view on Nvidia’s chip sales to China may well have prevailed over opponents on their own merits. Still, the 25% sales share probably helped.

The risk, of course, is that Treasury’s profits on Intel and sales of chips to China distract from national security. For example, after converting its CHIPS grants to equity, Intel is no longer bound by the conditions the Biden administration attached to those grants aimed at building certain types of advanced semiconductor capacity in the U.S.

Tyler Cowen interviewed Sam Altman... and what a weird thing to bring up. "They read Twitter less" as if it's a condemnation?
ALTMAN: One thing that’s different is that cycle times are much longer. The capital is more intense. The cost of screen up is higher, so I like to spend more time getting to know the people before saying, “Okay, you’re just going to do this, and I’ll trust that it’ll work out.” Otherwise the theory is the same. You try to find good, effective, fast-moving people. Get clear on what the goal is and just let them go do it.

COWEN: I visited Nvidia earlier this year. They were great. They were great to me. They’re super smart, but it just felt so different from walking the floor of OpenAI. I’m sure you’ve been to Nvidia. People read Twitter less. At least on the surface, they’re less weird. What is that intangible difference in the hardware world that one has to grasp to do well in it?

ALTMAN: Look, I don’t know if this is going to turn out to be a good sign or a bad sign, but our chip team feels more like the OpenAI research team than a chip company. I think it might work out phenomenally well.

‘NVIDIA has, according to its November 10-Q, agreed to $26 billion in cloud compute deals... The reason Jensen Huang said back in October that AI compute demand had gone up "substantially" in the last six months was because NVIDIA had stepped in to increase it.‘ www.wheresyoured.at/ai-my….
