Cass Sunstein sat for an interview with Isaac Chotiner of the New Yorker. Unsurprisingly, given Chotiner's track record, it did not go well for Sunstein--and not only because the best he could do to defend his friendship with Henry Kissinger was to say Kissinger wasn't as bad as Stalin. Details👇

Why Did Cass Sunstein Think Sitting for an Interview with Isaac Chotiner Was a Good Idea?

The most famous classic blunder is getting involved in a land war in Asia, but there are other classic blunders, including the only slightly...

Chotiner: let’s talk about this latest video Mr. Beast: of course I had a kill switch for that fire! Chotiner: to kill the fire if needed, of course Mr. Beast: kill the *fire*? Chotiner: what is your understanding of the function of a kill switch? Mr. Beast: OK, I see where this is going

Chotiner: Hello Ezra Klein: Hello, happy to be here Chotiner: you're making this big deal about not hating opponents and, uh wait no I can't Klein: What? Chotiner: I have a brand here, you've helped everyone else mock you so much. You've self-Chotinered! I'm cancelling the interview. *click*

CHOTINER: Do you ever feel guilty for making your interviewees look bad? CHOTINER: How are you doing this? CHOTINER: You’re aware of your reputation. CHOTINER: Are you my clone or from an alternate reality? CHOTINER: I can rephrase. CHOTINER: Are you me from the future? That would be cool.

Columbo: you see, that's what I don't understand: why these people would agree to be interviewed by you in the first place.
Chotiner: I don't make a habit of assuming the inner thoughts of my subjects.
Columbo: that's the thing, though. You'd figure they know what they're getting into?
Chotiner: they are free to read my prior interviews to understand my approach. Nobody forces them to sit down with me.
Columbo: I don't recall saying you force them to.
Chotiner: a figure of speech.

The debate about when to shun bad-faith interlocutors seems to me a bit tangled up with skills issues. Like, I've never seen anyone complain about Isaac Chotiner engaging with or "giving a platform to" terrible people. That's basically because Chotiner asks reasonable follow up questions.

I don’t think Chotiner would hit him hard at all. I think that interview would be very disappointing for the Left mainly because Chotiner and Ezra Klein run in the same circles.

What I wouldn't give for a TNC interview of Klein. Ta-Nehisi Chotiner his ass.

CHOTINER: Why did you misspell my name? COLBORN: I looked it up. Double-checked it. CHOTINER: And you saw it spelled with an 'o' at the end? COLBURN: I'm not sure. CHOTINER: When is your next appointment with an optometrist? COLBOURN: Okay, now look... CHOTINER: You did. Twice — and wrongly.

XAVIER: A wonderful woman, Illyana Rasputina. CHOTINER: I'm happy for them. How did they meet? XAVIER: Illyana was one of Kat's students, actually. CHOTINER: One of her students? XAVIER: Well, they're consulting adults now, of course. CHOTINER: Of course. XAVIER: Maybe don't mention this.

XAVIER: Some rather wonderful things, actually. She believed so much in the school and how it benefited her that a an adult she taught many of my younger students. CHOTINER: That's positive. And she's living happily today? XAVIER: Yes. Happy, successful, and deeply in love. CHOTINER: With whom?

CHOTINER: Obviously that's important. XAVIER: Obviously. CHOTINER: And this girl who struggled to learn at your school and became an assassin under the power of a demonic ninja named Ogun, she's your school's success story? XAVIER: Well, yes. CHOTINER: I see. So what is she doing now?

CHOTINER: What would be the point? XAVIER: She went to help family, a noble calling, & her journey allowed her to learn control over her power to the point she's able to literally walk on air. CHOTINER: But the assassinating? XAVIER: I think it's important to note that she never killed anyone.

CHOTINER: Control, certainly. But not of her powers the way it was told to me. XAVIER: Again, you are remarkably well informed. CHOTINER: Wasn't it an immortal demon who allowed her to control her powers while training then 14-yo Pryde to be an assassin? XAVIER: I think you're missing the point.

XAVIER: I trust Logan implicitly. He's had a hard life, and come through many dangers, but he's a good man. CHOTINER: A touching testimonial. So it was Logan who taught her control over her powers in Japan? XAVIER: In a sense. CHOTINER: In a sense? XAVIER: He taught her control, certainly.

CHOTINER: So do you have any success stories in teaching students some control? XAVIER: Yes, of course. Ms. Pryde, for instance. CHOTINER: And she's gained control of her powers that she previously lacked? XAVIER: Indeed. CHOTINER: And how did that happen? XAVIER: Is this on the record?

HTG, if I had a choice between seeing a question asked directly of me from Chotiner or Tewson? If Chotiner, I’d think for a long time before answering. Tewson? I’d immediately apologize and go back over what I’d said to look for my error.

CHOTINER: You mentioned trauma. May I ask you to elaborate? S. MILLER: It was AGONY. No wound like it has ever been recorded in the history of time. CHOTINER: I don’t see a scar. MILLER: Aryans heal quickly, even from dire injury. Like this. CHOTINER: Exactly which edge of the paper cut you?

TIGERS: Well he was a closer in DC and we used him earlier

CHOTINER: It says here his own fans called him Garbage Kyle?

TIGERS: Yes, well, it was just a nickname. You know fans these days.

CHOTINER: Right and the nickname is not based on his abilities?

TIGERS: We try to look at the whole player -

Why didn’t Chotiner do this Interview? Chotiner: How did this interview with Klein come about? Remnick: There was a lot of backlash and Ezra wanted to address some of the …Wait is this an interview?

In a new interview with David Remnick, the writer and podcaster Ezra Klein discusses his recent essay about Charlie Kirk and what people misunderstand about his own role in politics and media.
