If you've wondered how Northern Virginia's exurbs started to get paved over with data centers, this @notus.com report recaps how the late-'90s dot-com boom (first UUNET reference I've seen in a story in years!) brought fiber to Loudoun County that became an asset to market after the 2008 crash.
How Northern Virginia Became ‘Data Center Alley’

How Northern Virginia Became ‘Data Center Alley’

The region is considered the data center capital of the world. But as public opinion shifts, it could lose that title.

Are you in the Bay Area? Do you like old electronics? Come to the Electronics Flea Market tomorrow in Saratoga where we’ll be selling a bunch of stuff with proceeds going to Tech Exchange in honor of Gordon Mah Ung. Along with the Commodore PET I’m bringing a lot of other fun stuff. A sample:
A banner advertising the event at the Electronics Flea Market. The background is a series of 1s and 0s in a binary pattern. On the left is what looks like an IC on a circuit board that reads “CHARITY SALE in honor of GORDON MAH UNG” and on the right is a caricature of Gordon wearing a beaning with a The Full Nerd sticker. He’s got a backpack, Canon camera, ghost trap, fluffy animals, red crocs, and is giving the “Live Long and Prosper” Vulcan greeting.
A bunch of random electronics and toys sitting on a workbench. From the bottom up:

A GoVideo DVD VHS combo player marked at $50. It has manuals and the remote (not pictured)!

On top of the GoVideo is a Tomy Hootbot on the pedestal marked at $20. Eyes light up, head turns, wings flap, and feet tap. The propulsion is a little worse for wear so it doesn’t scoot along the ground but still a fun bot from the 80s.

To the right is a Extron digital video scaler with a display on the left, an input button, and a bunch of buttons to adjust color, tint, brightnext, contrast, etc. $20

On top of that is a Logitech TrackMan serial trackball that’s controlled by your thumb. It’s vaguely hand-shaped with a blue ball where your right hand thumb would sit and three buttons by your fingers. It features the awesome old Logitech logo with the weird eye and lines. $5
More random stuff! From left to right: A Coleco Donkey Kong LED tabletop arcade game marked at $60. The bottom of the machine has a bunch of tape residue presumably because the former owner lost the battery cover and taped in the batteries while slapping it and saying “these batteries aren’t going anywhere”. Tape has been replaced by a 3D printed battery cover. Yes, it works!

A sealed Star Trek First Contact Lip Balm! A lip balm tube with a cap that’s shaped like the Enterprise-E from the film. $5

A sealed Palm Pilot Professional from 3Com. It’s sealed with sharp corners and no tears in the shrinkwrap. Taking offers.

A blue Nintendo DS marked $30. There are dead pixels on the screen but it does power on and play games. Some scratches on the bottom digitizer screen as well.

A Casio Karate Fight LCD game marked $40 (yes, more than the DS). A strange bat-shaped handheld from Casio called Karate Fight. It features two controls, one on each side, for 2 players. There’s a cartoon bearded character doing a forward kick on the left and a younger guy in a prepared stance hands up on the right. The words “Karate Fight” are at the bottom and the LCD screen appears to be a competition arena with markers for the fighters to start.

A green and white XBOX One controller $15.
A box of 11 Atari 400/800 Educational System Cassettes learning modules in their individual boxes. $100 for all 11. Learn exciting subjects like Basic Sociology, Principles of Accounting, and Supervisory Skills from your 8-bit Atari computer.
