As the trade war between Canada and the U.S. intensifies, experts say the Canadian economy will take a hit. On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to raise tariffs on Canadian autos and steel to 50 per cent after Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended trade negotiations last week.

For those who are wondering, Canada’s unemployment rate is 6.4%. It’s gone down steadily over the last year, despite Trump’s tariffs and threats. Where did Trump get 10%? From the same hole where he sources all his “facts.”

Sweet Jesus. The President of the United States is mentally ill. I'm not being alarmist. I'm 100% serious. After reading this shit, I think you'll agree with my assessment...

Biden handed off an America where gas was $3.08 a gallon. Beef was $5.50 a pound. Unemployment was 4.0%. Inflation was down to 3.0% while wage growth was up to 4.1%. The Infrastructure, CHIPS, and Inflation Reduction Acts were creating jobs and bringing back manufacturing. And then ...

Donald J. Trump • + @realDonaldTrump

Lots of "bluster" from Doug Ford, who is the Premier of the Canadian Province of Ontario, but who is better known as the less charismatic, intelligent, and overall unimpressive brother of the late, great, Rob Ford. America has been carrying Canada for decades, but no longer! The U.S.A. will always be far bigger, richer, and stronger than Canada. Without the United States, Canada couldn't survive — It's where they get all of their money and, because of their current bad leadership, primarily Governor Carney, and his Flunky, Ford, they will not be allowed to keep taking advantage of the United States — Their key to survival. Remember, much of the Electricity, Oil, and Gas that Canada gets is transported through the U.S.A. Someone should get these clowns to "fall in line" or, the consequences for Canada will be far WORSE! Canada's Unemployment Rate is now at 10%, and rapidly rising. Their businesses are fleeing for the United States, and it's all because of their failed policies, and inept leadership! The days of ripping off our Farmers, and other Businesses, are OVER! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP 1.77k ReTruths 6.46k Likes

Trump hits out against Doug Ford, who's been slamming him and backing a tough response, including potential restrictions on energy and minerals. Trump cites an incorrect unemployment rate. And mentions Canadian energy is transported through the US too - a possible reference to Enbridge's Line 5:

Starting Sunday, workers involved in labor disputes must comply with the state’s rigorous job search requirements to receive benefits. This means actively seeking work and recording efforts to find another job.

I have a feeling, and it might be very wrong, that the return of real budget constraints is going to serve progressives (and perhaps especially liberals) better than conservatives.

When inflation and interest rates were low and unemployment was high, Krugman was right to push back against GOP austerity. But I don’t think “2026 is just like 2011” is the play here.
