🛶 Optional prep reading for HF: @rnrhamster.bsky.social mentioned the issue of dialect difficulty. The sound of HF's language comes from a particular place and time; though it reads oddly in the 21st century, several of Twain's contemporaries comment on its accuracy. Here's a short explainer.

🛶📖 Huck Finn readers, see you on Saturday, 8/15, to talk about chs. 1-5. Optional extra reading below in the comments.
An 1884 photograph of Mark Twain. He is standing up, wearing a white (linen?) suit and spiffy loafers, and holding hat and cane in his right hand. The backdrop is a studio photographer's painting of a creek at the edge of the woods. Twain is looking off in the distance, perhaps slightly annoyed that he's not actually outdoors.

Thoughts on That Word, a 🧵🛶📖 Note to Huck Finn/James readers: If you haven't read HF in a while, or haven't yet read it, you might be surprised by the serious subjects (and objectionable language) within. Please be aware that this children's novel (!) includes scenes of slavery, murder...

James is shorter than HF. The challenge (for me) with HF is the dialect. You do get used to it as you read on. The main challenge (again, for me) as we read is the use of a racial slur over 200 times. I never got used to it. Some editions and arguments are made to sub that with a different word.

🛶 Gearing up for the next Bluesky book read: Huckleberry Finn, which I haven’t read in decades, and then James, which I have been wanting to read! Hi book pals! Not yet a book pal? Still time to join us!

Hello, readers! It’s Modern/Classics time as we take on Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and Percival Everett’s retelling, “James.” Who’s in? Post here, and I will add you to the feed! (Which I am still tinkering with!) Schedule to come, but 8/15-9/30.) 🛶📖 #HuckandJames
