I can never understand looking at nonsense online and getting enraged by it, and then reposting it so that others can be enraged. Like all this Nolan/Odyssey stuff. Don't give these people an avenue into your peace. Let the terminally online remain as such. Go find your joy.

Really good thread! I know media literacy is deeply embattled in our culture, but: it's okay to like the Nolan Odyssey movie (I did!) and it's also good and, imo, vitally important to our culture to thoughtfully critique and seek a deeper understanding around art, adaptations, retellings, etc.

I finally saw Nolan’s Odyssey, & everything Emily Wilson said was correct, especially the weirdness of an Odyssey without gods. But imo, the lack of “pagan” gods is really only one example of the broader Christian ethos that has been layered onto the Odyssey for this movie. 1/10

it's valid to argue that this takes the horrifying ending to the poem and makes it more palatable, but at the same time, would you want a film, right now, where the restoration of patriarchal power and masculine dominance by mass murder was an uncomplicated right thing to do?

I don't know what I expected from a Christopher Nolan Odyssey movie but the fact that in reality there are no stakes at all because you know he's making it home the whole time and then the final scene where he defeats 50 dudes single handed is the dumbest thing I've ever seen
