Attention Alphabetters! This is your reminder that Mon 27 Jul is the start of Week D and the theme for the #AlphabetChallenge is Dark. Dark in any sense of the word- dark hair, dark eyes, dark humour, dark arts, dark places, or just night shots. You get to be creative😊 Use the # below and have fun!

Horizontal, high contrast, colour photo of two butterflies on bright green, shiny, glossy, striped green leaves.

Google says that the butterfly on the left is: "a Julia Heliconian (Dryas iulia), recognizable by its bright orange color with black markings, particularly along the wing edges. The butterfly on the right is a Tiger Longwing (Heliconius hecale), distinguished by its narrow forewings featuring orange and black striped or banded patterns." "Unlike most adult butterflies that survive for only a few weeks, Heliconius longwings can live for up to six months because they have evolved the rare ability to actively process and digest pollen for extra amino acids rather than surviving strictly on sugary nectar."

Both butterflies are resting on the shiny, striped, highly patterned, each and shiny green leaves of a tropical green plant at Houston's Cockrell Butterfly Center. The light hits the insects and the leaves that they're resting on while everything else is darkened by shadows.

Last one for the weekly #AlphabetChallenge of #WeekCForCurves is this gopher snake, who obviously just had a nice meal. Can’t wait to see what Sheena @sheena-mck.bsky.social comes up with for next week. #ECK #WCK #Oregon #PNW #Snake #Reptile #Nature #Photography
A Gopher Snake (Pituophis catenifer), a non-venomous species native to North America, moving on our property. The bulge near the middle shows that the snake recently had a meal of possibly a rodent. Gopher snakes are often mistaken for a rattlesnake due to its similar coloration, patterned back, and defensive behavior, but they are harmless and beneficial to the environment.
