Pretty heartbroken that Alice Wong, @sfdirewolf.bsky.social, passed away. She was an incredible organizer for #disability justice and her clear, rigorous vision for a world that is optimized — not antagonized by — disability really changed the way I think. (1/3)

Rest in Power Alice Wong. You made so many rethink disability justice with your book including me. Disability Visibility. She was only 3 months older than me. What a fierce life.
Black text on white background.
Advocacy is not just a task for charismatic individuals or high-profile community organizers. Advocacy is for all of us; advocacy is a way of life. It is a natural response to the injustices and inequality in the world.

Rest in power, Alice Wong. A fierce disability justice oracle, storyteller, and now ancestor. She taught us that disabled wisdom lights the future, and that our stories must never be erased. We mourn. We fight. We carry her work forward. Thank you, Alice. For everything you gave us.

“With so many marginalized communities, we’re basically the oracles…we’re the ones who see shit before it happens.” In June 2020, I interviewed Alice Wong for TVU before she lost her ability to speak. I asked her how she’d first learned of SARS-CoV-2. She began with the 2016 election of Trump:

Honouring the life and work of Alice Wong. Her reminder that “community is magic, power, and resistance” must continue to guide & inspire disability justice movements. May her memory be a revolution. In solidarity with @stimpunks.org and our wider disabled community. |
ALT
This image is a tribute to Alice Wong, with a soft sunset sky in pink, purple, and orange tones as the background. Centered across the image is a quote in bold black text:

“What I have always been hoping to accomplish is the creation of community.
Community is magic.
Community is power.
Community is resistance.”
— Alice Wong

Below the quote, there is a memorial line that reads:

“May her memory be a revolution
(March 27, 1974 – November 14, 2025)”

In the bottom-right corner is the Stimpunks logo, which includes an umbrella symbol.

Rest in power, Alice Wong. She was such a fierce force in the disability justice movement that I don't think her impact could possibly be overstated. So grateful for all the wisdom she shared with us.

“Don’t let the bastards grind you down. I love you all.”

Hi everyone, it looks like I ran out of time. I have so many dreams that I wanted to fulfill and plans to create new stories for you. There are a few in progress that might come to fruition in a few years if things work out. I did not ever imagine I would live to this age and end up a writer, editor, activist, and more. As a kid riddled with insecurity and internalized ableism, I could not see a path forward. It was thanks to friendships and some great teachers who believed in me that I was able to fight my way out of miserable situations into a place where I finally felt comfortable in my skin.
We need more stories about us and our culture.
You all, we all, deserve the everything and more in such a hostile, ableist environment. Our wisdom is incisive and unflinching. I'm honored to be your ancestor and believe disabled oracles like us will light the way to the future. Don't let the bastards grind you down. I love you all.

Learning of the passing of Alice Wong this morning hit hard. She was such a fierce thinker and activist pushing the disability justice movement forward. May she rest in power as the oracle of an ancestor she claimed, axe.

My statement from @americanprogress.bsky.social on disability justice activist, author, MacArthur fellow, and cyborg oracle Alice Wong.
"Alice Wong, a proud Asian American and disabled woman, transformed the disability justice movement by insisting that disabled stories, disabled joy, and disabled futures mattered. Through her fearless advocacy and storytelling, she made sure millions of disabled people could not be ignored. Alice was known as the cyborg oracle in the disability community, challenging systems that devalued disabled lives while expanding the movement by emphasizing dignity and collective care. As a disabled ancestor, her legacy will forever shape the community.”

Devastating. Alice was a powerful voice in disability justice activism, arts and storytelling, who helped so many people see that our stories matter. Rest in power.

Really sad to hear of the passing of @sfdirewolf.bsky.social - a fierce, powerful voice for disability justice and by all accounts a lovely human being. Will be setting aside some time to revisit her work.

I would not be doing any of what I am doing in disability justice and accessibility without the light of Alice Wong, her writing and her cultivation and nuturing of disabled voices. I know so many of us feel the same.

If only people understood that we could expand socialism through disability justice. You shouldn’t have to go above and beyond to prove your disability. If anyone lies about their disability to benefit from an accommodation it’s literally because they needed it. Accommodations help everyone .

Gutted to learn this morning of the passing of disability justice activist Alice Wong @sfdirewolf.bsky.social 😥 I admire her writing & fierceness in advocating for herself & others for protections in hospital in the early days of the pandemic, how I came to know of her. What a force! RIP Alice 💜

Can’t stop thinking about Alice Wong today. I couldn’t do any of what I’ve done and hope to do with disability justice in libraries without the foundation she laid, and I suspect that’s true of a lot of people in a lot of different disciplines. I hope she knew what an impact she made.

Rest in Power, Alice. I will always be so grateful for everything you taught me about disability justice, as I first discovered my own disabled identity as a teen. I'm honored for the space you gave me in Disability Visibility, and to have been alive with you on this earth at the same time ❤️
