Been hanging out with the wonderful @npmx.dev folks (they are serious when they talk about community!) and a lot of other awesome people this week. What a great conference @localfirstconf.com and thanks to everyone organising!
Five wonderful people with the Spree river of Berlin in the background.

much to the disappointment of my peers i've started working on Yet Another Atproto Library For Gleam ™️ which i think puts us at three WIPs not counting the vibe coded one. obviously *my* wheel is gonna be the best one though 😌

[Jigsaw voice] Hello atproto developer. Your job is to leave this room without reinventing the wheel in front of you. The door is unlocked, and you can just walk out with the wheel you’ve been given.

Not everyone has someone to ask when they're stuck on their homework at 2am. I wanted to fix that, a math tutor that lives on your phone, works fully offline, and doesn't send your kid's schoolwork to anyone. So I made LocalMathy! (My first mobile app, Android, iOS coming soon) You get […]

i kind of ended up at @localfirstconf.com on a whim, im adjacent to a lot folks in that space but not really a part of it. walked away after yesterday having never felt so enthused and energised after a conf. @inkandswitch.com in particular are something really special. if you can, go next year.

@pronouns.northsky.social now has over 270 pronoun combinations! This is a bit unwieldy to handle through liking posts so the pronoun webapp has been updated to include a picker and sync to the profile lexicon! This allows you to choose between 2 and 3 pronoun combinations. pronouns.northsky.app
A screenshot of the northsky pronoun picker webapp where a user can use drop downs to select their pronouns. They are also prompted to update their profile pronoun field to match.

Had a fantastic time at @localfirstconf.com. Started off relatively stark with discussions acknowledging the general political instability of our times and how much data sovereignty matters. Ended with an absolutely wild demo of @inkandswitch.com's patchwork project. Lots of good bits in between.

There's a case for publicly owned, public sector tech (think, ERPs and associated software), particularly at the local level. But there's a collective action problem in creating it. Big, first movers might help solve that.

Easy for critics to say “well, Mamdani hates the private sector, and everyone knows govt tech is garbage.” Easy, but wrong. What people who know tech and govt have been screaming for years is that building good tech needs in-house capacity, but in a way thats different from standard IT shops.

Innovations like PIT Crew seek to solve both sets of problems. NYC should be able to attract top talent and their job descriptions advertise accelerated hiring. The sense of urgency and purpose that these offices create can change the culture of government. Having government ownership of the product should save money and improve quality. There are a lot of big ifs in Mamadani’s big bet on tech, but it matches something he promised in his inauguration speech: “we will govern expansively and audaciously. We may not always succeed. But never will we be accused of lacking the courage to try.”
