The normalizing of these raging sociopaths is a national problem, and a particular problem here in San Francisco

Article gives key context: Public housing often segregated by race until the 1968 Fair Housing Act passed. Shortly after, Nixon issued moratorium on future PH construction & 1990s-era federal program to rebuild and modernize PH replaced only 1/2 the units it tore down. Thousands of units were lost.

Are universities going to be forced to hand out degrees to students who refuse to engage with class materials and scientific evidence and cite the Bible instead? If so, what’s the point of a college degree?

And a GOP representative in Oklahoma said the student “cited real science.” You can read the essay and see if there’s any scientific evidence

gabe woolley, an oklahoma state rep, repeatedly misgenders the TA here and says the OU student that vaguely alluded to the bible in her essay "cited real science"

Of course, I’m not surprised that OU’s administration didn’t stand behind the teaching assistant who was trying to uphold academic standards and instead chose to coddle this student over claims of First Amendment right violations

I’m afraid that this is going to become part of the playbook of conservative student organizations to oust professors and TAs they don’t like. As a side effect, this will lead to college degrees being worth less because academic standards will have to be lowered to not upset these groups

Increasingly concerning times for higher education in red states. A conservative student claimed discrimination over an essay where she didn’t cite any source nor address the main question, and instead mentioned the Bible. As a result, the teaching assistant was put on administrative leave

OU has put the professor here on administrative leave:

The University of Oklahoma takes seriously concerns involving First Amendment rights, certainly including religious freedoms. Upon receiving notice from the student on the grading of an assignment, the University immediately began a full review of the situation and has acted swiftly to address the matter.
First, the college acted immediately to address the academic issue raised by the student. College leaders contacted her on the day her letter was received and have maintained regular communication throughout the process. As previously stated, a formal grade appeals process was conducted. The process resulted in steps to ensure no academic harm to the student from the graded assignments.
Second, the student reported filing a claim of illegal discrimination based on religious beliefs to the appropriate university office. OU has a clear process for reviewing such claims and it has been activated.
The graduate student instructor has been placed on administrative leave pending the finalization of this process. To ensure fairness in the process, a full-time professor is serving as the course instructor for the remainder of the semester.
OU remains firmly committed to fairness, respect and protecting every student's right to express sincerely held religious beliefs.

Seeing Patti Smith on Friday was phenomenal, but the Television cover interlude after the band finished playing Horses really drove home how I should have made a bigger effort to see Tom Verlaine before he passed.

Yes, of course, and what I meant with “more space” means more lanes for travel and parking vs safe bike/ped infrastructure

Historical evidence is overwhelming: The Founding generation that wrote the Fifth Amendment routinely captured pirates on the high seas and brought them back for trial with full due process - jury trials, right to counsel, presentation of evidence. They did not just kill them. /c
