I was just a bit too old for the boy's own adventures of Optimus Prime and his fellow #Transformers, preferring instead the love and rocketships in the anime space opera #Macross. This week I learned that the father of transforming robot vehicles – Shōji Kawamori – designed both.
A Macross Valkyrie and The Transformers' Optimus Prime (original name: Battle Convoy). Both were designed by Japanese artist Shōji Kawamori. Both were piloted vehicles until toy company Hasbro did away with the latter's 'micromen' pilots and enlisted US comics writer Jim Shooter to make them characters of their own.
