The Collinwood School fire in 1908 killed 172 students and two teachers. It led to requirements for schools to have multiple exits. A monument in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland remembers victims of the fire. Day 20: Fire #31DaysOfGraves
A bronze plaque depicts a hooded angel with wings spread to shelter teachers and children huddling away from the fire. The plaque is attached to a towering black granite slab.

Perhaps somewhat tenuous for the #fire prompt of #31DaysOfGraves - but I think of the fiery red poppies & red sandstone. 🥀 This is a memorial in Ancrum, a village in the Scottish Borders, commemorating the men who lost their lives during WW1 1914-1918 (aka "The Great War"). #LestWeForget #Scotland
A memorial for the fallen men from Ancrum who lost their lives in the First World War, made of red sandstone. A solid plinth forms the base, which supports a stone cross. The cross is carved with an elegant sword and bears a crest with a Lion Rampant (a heraldic symbol featured on Scotland's Coat of Arms).

Day 20 of #31daysofgraves: Fire. The inverted torch (the "snuffing out of life") was a common motif in 19th c US cemeteries. The example on the left is from Vine Lake Cemetery in Medfield, Massachusetts. I would argue the motif on the right, from Assistens Kirkegård in Copenhagen, is a similar take.

I am very sorry 😔 Would be the company of #31DaysOfGraves fellows be of some comfort? So many different people from Canada, US, UK, Ireland, France, Spain and Germany. And always first from Australia and New Zealand - all standing together at the graves.
