Joined very interesting sessions at #SoCraTes2025 today and gave two myself. "Building Secure Enough Products - Bumps & Boosters" led to an impactful experience exchange of what holds us back & what helps us move in good directions. 💡 1/2
Photo of flip chart showing the following list of gathered bumps holding us back when it comes to building secure enough products:

Authentication and authorization: boring and annoying, complicated and easy to mess up

Knowledge: where to even start, lack of imagination what attackers might do

"We had more important things to do"

Implied trust

Poor observability: complex, what to consider malicious

"Let's hide this - we can't use the paper trail"

Unclear incident response process: what now when the heat is on

Insecure defaults

Regulation: just ticking boxes, overinterpreting what is sensitive data

Third party tools: no insights, so many supply chain attacks

Performance drops: additional auth requests

Poor usability of security features: people find workarounds
Photo of flip chart showing the following list of gathered boosters helping us move forward when it comes to building secure enough products:

Authentication and authorization: enabler for features

Check and update dependencies through tools

Knowledge sharing: helpful security team, security champions, threat modelling

Awareness by example: CTFs, cheat sheets

Use helpful security products - trustworthy ones

Define "secure enough" and risk appetite

Use metrics for the win: show progress, motivation

Regular external penetration tests

Do security testing yourself first

Regular fire drills and dry runs for emergency cases

Regulation: what data do we really need?

Security features supporting user experience: SSO

Iterate

Standardization: don't reinvent the security wheel

Competitive advantage: customers expecting level

Zero trust: guardrails, limit blast radius

Celebrating success stories: reinforce good practices

I would play this. I love my old passive 4 string Warwick fretless. I'll bet it sounds monstrous.

Warwick Leland Sklar custom "Star Bass"

Here's a doubleneck bass Warwick made for Leland Sklar. It looks like a doubleneck hollowbody Les Paul with two F-holes. The top neck is a fretless 4-string, and the bottom neck is a fretted 5-string. Each neck has two fat single-coil pickups, and each neck has its own volume, tone control, and 3-way switch. There's also a 4-way rotary switch (top/both/bottom/mute) by the top neck. The only inlays on the necks are shaped like hands flipping you off.

I went to see Liberation last night and it was a wonderful time. It's around for a bit longer, but there are vanishingly few tickets. If you're in Manchester I highly highly recommend it www.royalexchange.co.uk/e….

Where are you on your #testing with #AI and #automation path? All in? Cautiously optimistic? A pox on thee? Keeping an eye on things? Here are some of my thoughts. www.youtube.com/watch?v=L….

I'm a rebel. I tweak my slide color choices to be WCAG AA compliant rather than company slide police compliant. 🌈🌻

Soooo - that electrical engineering knowledge (and soldering skills) become even more important. Despite being operated well within spec one of the capacitors blew up. Hopefully that should be easy to fix.

Most of the time I want things to just work but I'll admit that having to come up with a solution to a problem also has it's perks. I finally fixed an issue in my tiny PV power plant and seeing it work makes me really happy. That old electrical engineering knowledge does have its benefits.

If you are in leadership, like it or not your in involved in the business of empire building. The question to ask yourself is whose empire are you building? And if it was your empire, what would you want it to look like?

Enterprise is empire building. Not all empires look alike though. The ones that intrigue me are those that don’t follow org structures. Can you spot them?

It's been a while since I felt like dressing up for #ReverseCasualFriday but today I found the energy for it. Looking at the pictures I realise that I need a pink pocket square to match the tie. Have a good day and a great weekend!
Self portrait of me, a middle aged white man. I'm wearing a dark grey shirt, pink tie, charcoal vest and black suit jacket.
Same outfit as before but the vest is more clearly visible.

Here’s my Coldplay-gate hot take: I’ve always felt making the audience the focus of big screens uncomfortable. Not everyone wants to be the focus of attention Especially lookalike “jokes”, because making jokes at the expense of the appearance of a random member of public isn’t funny

Yesterday I had someone on my team say “Oh Meg is really against AI” & then I was told I have to use it or I’ll get left behind. They just assumed I wasn’t using it or I was using it wrong. I have been using it for years now & I dislike that folks assume I’m ignorant because I criticise it.

Sometimes I wonder if me showing support for the LGBTQIA+ community in professional contexts has any effect. Then there are times where a friend I made at a conference trusts me enough to ask questions about gender, community, support organisations. Today he announced publicly that he's a trans man🎉

Back to our rural roots. 🤣 Gas station BBQ, a dose of homophobia moonlighting as family therapy, and lots and lots of Blueridge mountain nostalgia. But time with toddlers and babies make it all worthwhile. 🌈
