For people into long folk ballads, The Gest of Robin Hood is 456 verses, spilt into 8 parts and took 2 episodes to fit into the In The Roud podcast (1 for the history, 1 for the singing.) 6 of us wrote tunes and recorded parts, with Matt & I taking 2 parts each to create a 90 minute song! #FolkMusic

I struggle with modern uses of the term “folk music”. It seems that anything with even the slightest suggestion of an acoustic instrument gets the tag… when little or any of it is folk (or even less, vernacular) in any way whatsoever.

to be fair, Smithsonian Folkways is a label known for their folk music releases and The Daemon Lover's title comes from a ballad. "The Lottery" and "as read by" shouldve clued me in tho.
