“No, it’s okay,” Jungkook said. He laid a hand on Namjoon’s arm.

Namjoon looked up sharply.

The thought that Sentinels and Guides could find each other by touch was an old myth. There were fairy tales in most cultures about it. But growing up as a Guide, Namjoon learned early that there was often some tiny buzz when he touched a Sentinel, a sense that he could connect to them and maybe - maybe - help them with their senses.

The buzz was there. And when he looked into Jungkook’s wondering eyes and reached out with his mind, he could feel Jungkook there in a way he’d never felt anyone’s spirit before. Not even with Hajoon had it been this easy.

The bell rang, and he and Jungkook both reached out to slap the sign with Jungkook’s name on it down.

The person next to Namjoon sighed noisily and stomped around to the next table over. <i>Too bad,</i> he thought smugly. <i>Get your own.</i>

He looked back to meet Jungkook’s eyes and they both collapsed in nervous giggles.

He chances a quick glance towards it as he dodges a slash from Vante’s dagger.
There’s smoke.
The Mare’s here. I need to get him alone.
As soon as he thinks those words, a voice that isn’t his echoes inside his mind, making him freeze in place:
“Interesting.”
The voice is deep and velvety. It holds a soothing airiness to it that makes it hauntingly beautiful.
And intimidating. Or maybe it’s just the representation of it in his head that makes it sound so unique.
Either way, it’s not his voice, and that fact alone is enough to make him stumble back.
Vante though, doesn’t take that as an opportunity to strike. Instead, the design on his face changes into what can only be described as a smug expression.
Oh.
That was Vante’s voice.
In his head.
