What has Ancestry done with it's hints tab? It's made my research so much harder. There's so much white space to scroll through without any benefit. The hints have been going seriously AWOL recently, but I could live with that if I could see two or three on a page. #AncestryHour #GenHour #Ancestry

The older NAI genealogy site has been offline for a couple of days. There's a banner across the main site but I wonder if this might mean bigger changes afoot. #IrishGenealogy #AncestryHour #GenHour #Genealogy #FamilyHistory
A banner on a blue background reading "The National Archives’ microsites are offline due to maintenance on the server. We will provide information in the coming days on how to access these collections, including material available in the Reading Room."

#AncestryHour I wonder sometimes if some of these nicknames are from a children's book that was popular at the time our relatives were children, but hasn't survived so we're unaware of it.

What is it about Dolly? Mine was actually called Mabel Annie. #AncestryHour

#AncestryHour Unless ... the author of the book and the people who gave your aunt the nickname are both pulling from an earlier source that is unknown to us. It's always important to consider the time period when you're playing that guessing game.

A likely source for many, no doubt, but in my case several decades too late! #AncestryHour

#AncestryHour I wonder how many "Dolly" nicknames are out there because of the musical. 🎶 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hel….

Right?! And yet to reply to my request to rectify it too! I'm starting to think she doesn't want to be found 😅 #ancestryhour

Nancy for Agnes is a new one for me that could prove very helpful on a mini brick wall of mine, thanks! #AncestryHour

There are so many! Peggy for Margaret, Polly for Mary, Jack for John, Nancy for Anne or Hannah... Then there are ones related to work or appearance, special Army or Navy versions, and those seemingly pulled out of a hat, like my 2x great-aunt Mabel who was known as Dolly... #AncestryHour

My mum talked about her auntie Dolly so when I started searching for a birth certificate I was thinking Dorothy but it turned out to be Harriet Edith All siblings were older brothers so perhaps she looked like a doll & got her nickname that way. I have no other idea #Ancestryhour

#AncestryHour In the 20th C, though, watch out for nicknames that have nothing at all to do with the first or middle name the person has. from research: a man named Thomas Frederick had the nickname "Bob" or Robert. Not sure why. I finally confirmed it with his obit.

#AncestryHour People might have a nickname associated with a popular TV or radio character or whatever but without their peer group to clue you in, you'll have no way of predicting it or figuring it out.

#ancestryhour ....they sent me the completely wrong thing. Not just a marriage certificate with the wrong people, but a death certificate! Which I did not order, and is of no one I know. Sigh. I wonder who got sent my order?!

Some of the less obvious ones I've come across: Lilian for Elizabeth (Ireland); Isabel(la) for Elizabeth (Scotland); Hannah for Ann; Nancy for Agnes or Ann; Minnie for Mary Jane or sometimes Mary. #AncestryHour

I just received copies of New York parish register entries that I requested over 20 months ago - that's a new record! Don't get me wrong - I am extremely grateful to be able to access these records at all, especially from across the pond - but it does make project planning difficult! #AncestryHour

#ancestryhour I thought you might enjoy this update on my missing birthrecord for g-grandma. Decided to take a break and order her marriage certificate for fun. Guess what DIA sent me....
