It's always important to consider the time period when you're playing that guessing game.

There are so many! Peggy for Margaret, Polly for Mary, Jack for John, Nancy for Anne or Hannah... Then there are ones related to work or appearance, special Army or Navy versions, and those seemingly pulled out of a hat, like my 2x great-aunt Mabel who was known as Dolly...

My mum talked about her auntie Dolly so when I started searching for a birth certificate I was thinking Dorothy but it turned out to be Harriet Edith
All siblings were older brothers so perhaps she looked like a doll & got her nickname that way. I have no other idea #Ancestryhour

#AncestryHour In the 20th C, though, watch out for nicknames that have nothing at all to do with the first or middle name the person has.
from research: a man named Thomas Frederick had the nickname "Bob" or Robert. Not sure why. I finally confirmed it with his obit.
