I have been texting a friend about gardening stuff and autocorrect keeps changing hosta to hostage. I will be bringing the hostage over to my friend.

We looked at so much, too! The hostas, the log pile, the stream, the woodshed, and the workshop! But then she was panting so I decided it was time for inside and cooling off.

We have all the windows and doors open, it’s 65° here and hostas are coming up everywhere…all is well, except for the Mariners who play at 4pm 🕓 PST

Once two police officers came to my door in the middle of the night and one of them couldn’t stop staring at the hostas in our front yard. When they turned to go he said, “those hostas are something else!” Incredible plants.

I’d feel differently about hostas if they were natives, but I’m just not a fan of lots of hostas. A patch of them is ok if they’re offset by vegetation with a very different form, but generally speaking I don’t see them worth it. Much better to use the space for natives (/rant)

It took me a minute to warm up to hostas when I moved to a very shaded place. I soon fell in love with blue hostas and then giant hostas. They’re tough, drought resistant and reliable for years.

Mother and baby hosta in a new garden bed I’m working on (a work in progress)
A garden bed that’s pretty sparse but you can see two hostas in the ground surrounded by cedar mulch

The thing about hostas is…if you’ve got one hosta, you have infinite hostas. You just jam your shovel in the ground, cut it in half, and stick the other half wherever you want it. They are great for filling in spaces in the garden. 🪴 🪏

The most aggressive plants in my garden: ivy and hostas. Hostas gearing up. Ivy lives year round. Not even the harshest winter scares them. For the sake of the other plants, whose survival is threatened, I’ll have to dig up some.

I'm impatient to put new phlox, rudbeckia, hostas, and asters in the ground to replace what the moles and rabbits have eaten the last 2 years. But while it's hot enough I just had to get my shorts out, it's going to be 30° overnight for the next few nights and I am frustrate.

Thanks! This is my artistic take on Astilbe blooming among Water Lilies. For a similar look in reality, your friend could plant pink Astilbe near Hostas—they create that same dreamy contrast in a garden! 🌸

I was talking slugs v. hostas with the lady who'll be looking after my garden for 2wks and she said they use WD40....sprayed around the tops of pots, not on the plants of course. So, I'll be outside doing that this afternoon. #gardening
