ASOIAF is consistently praised for the emotional realism of its characters. It's a character driven drama so this is great! Other less realistic elements *also* serve the story and themes, so it all makes sense. Only unfortunate thing is people thinking it's all realistic.

I would argue it's not JUST that, there's various points where you see that it's also about creating a romantic/orientalist vision of history GRRM finds more exciting than the real thing, but yes, it reads best as a morality tale, which is why I think the ASOIAF fandom is one of the few that 1/2

yeah, I think ASOIAF is very bad at "what the medieval world was actually like" but good at "GRRM wants to tell a story about what happens if you totally give into patriarchy"
it may purport to be "realistic" but it's telling a story where realism is heightened to emphasize what GRRM dislikes

Bret Devereauxs series on GOT intersects with this very neatly I think because it points out ways in which the numerous "historical inaccuracies" of ASOIAF produce a world which is significantly more violent and "grittier" than the real medieval world was
