Wowā€”what is your connection to the catholic worker? (I didnā€™t know much about that movement (except a kind of common knowledge) until one of my best friends married Pat and Kathleen Jordanā€™s daughter, and I started seeing them pretty often and got very interested.)

Yes! The Jordans, who helped Dorothy in her later years, are wonderful people; I was lucky to be able to say a few words at Patā€™s memorial service at the Catholic Worker last year.

Iā€™m a baby boomer. I worked my whole life for peace, liberty, and equality, not to mention ecology. I went to jail for a few paltry days and got mildly roughed up by the police a couple of times. I was a Catholic Worker. The result? Trump and global warming. Iā€™m a such an idiotic failure.

How are we defining Mutual Aid here, because the commentariat seem focused on the fraternal organizations and risk pools, which were important social institutions, but Mutual Aid is more like The Catholic Workers, The Unemployed Citizens, the IWO, etc. and those surged in the Depression Era.

Ok! Time for the longer story! (I may fall asleep) The story of Mutual Aid in the Depression is not the story of Fraternal Lodge Safety Nets that stretched to breaking. It's The Unemployed Citizens, it's Dorothy Day, it's "No Jim Crow In the IWO!" It's our story, Workers and Lumpen of the world!

However, it didn't end entirely because times got too tough and mutual aid collapsed under the weight (and it wasn't exactly mutual aid but that's a longer story), but because powerful interests arrayed against it.

I've come to agree w/Tom Cornell (recently passed, old school Catholic Worker who was actually a close friend of hers) that what she meant by that quip was more complicated than simply "don't run me through the canonization process"

As a college student, the Worker House gave me shelter so I could attend my final weeks of class for credit required for graduation without having to start a car with a spoon to spark the carbureter: a 45 min drivešŸŒ¹Dorothy Day has always been a saint to mešŸŒ¹Make it so Papa LeošŸŒ»

Dorothy Day was, in religion, a very traditional Catholic. She was a giant thorn in the side of NY's very conservative, archbishop, Cardinal Spellman. If he had ordered her to stop, she would have instantly obeyed. But Spellman didn't want to go down in history as repressing a saint.

There are some Catholic Workers who run a local homeless shelter and soup kitchen and are a longstanding part of the peace and social justice movements where I live. I know some of them have done time for antiwar activities.
