In July 1976, the National Catholic Reporter asked a number of prominent American Catholics if, on the occasion of the Bicentennial, what sentiments and reflections they had for their fellow Americans. Dorothy Day responded:

I note in particular this paragraph, from the same article, 'The Catholic Worker Leaflets: An Attempt to Spread the Churche's [sic] Doctrine', in the 1 September 1934 edition of The Catholic Worker.

Kind of amazing discussion of the realities of 1930s US fascist ('patriotic') groups in this article about Catholic Worker campaigning against American fascism and imperialist war (and also against CLASS WAR and CLASS HATE), from the 1 September 1934 edition of The Catholic Worker.

“As we come to know the seriousness of the situation, the war, the racism, the poverty in our world, we come to realize that things will not be changed simply by words or demonstrations. Rather, it's a question of living one's life in a drastically different way. Dorothy Day

Peter Maurin used to say that we need to build a world where it is easier for people to be good. I think about this a lot.

A lot of people are talking about the Weather Underground due to Zayd Ayers Dohrn's book (which I'd like to read!) and podcast (which was fascinating) and because of that, I learned that Daniel Berrigan wrote the group a letter in 1970. www.newpersonalism.net/le….

I was raised Catholic and never even heard of this until a couple of years ago. But imagine how much more they’d hate Catholics if they knew of Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker movement. Still at it, too. catholicworker.org

Simple, and once I explain it, completely obvious: I saw Reds at the age of 14; I became deeply interested in early 20th Century Communists/Socialists; of course I became super liberal; learned about Dorothy Day; 35 years later attended my son’s 8th grade graduation mass; 3 months later I’m in RCIA

You know who was really great at writing well rounded, fair and honest portraits of people who were known for their difficult, problematic, even criminal behavior? Dorothy Day
