On the weekend I visited the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester, MA. Every time I go to this local museum, I’m struck by the compelling work on display. This time the exhibition explored both the history of the 19th Amendment and the contemporary women’s rights movement. #art #womenrights

Interest in my Zenodo preprint hacking the phase separation narrative in membrane biology is increasing. Show them that a preprint can outperform pseudoscience rubbish in Nature and Science. Don't let up! Kervin, T.A. No phases? No phase separation. Zenodo (2025). doi.org/10.5281/zeno...

New paper out in Synthese—a metaphysical theory of causation designed to explain statistical causal inference. Basically a summary of a 100,000-word book (Causation: Science, Statistics and Metaphysics) that'll go into production with CUP soon. Watch this space link.springer.com/article….

Causal inference and the metaphysics of causation - Synthese

The techniques of causal inference are widely used throughout the non-experimental sciences to derive causal conclusions from probabilistic premises. This poses a philosophical question. What in the n...

Interesting new paper by Ned Block, exploring the implications if subcomputational biological mechanisms turn out to be necessary for consciousness (the entertainingly named "meat hypothesis") www.cell.com/trends/cogni...
Can only meat machines be conscious?

Can only meat machines be conscious?

Computational functionalism claims that executing certain computations is sufficient for consciousness, regardless of the physical mechanisms implementing those computations. This view neglects a comp...

New book "Transdicourse 3: Women in Art, Science and Body Politics" is out - edited by the wonderful Jill Scott. In our chapter "Conversations in the Space of Art-Science Practice" Helen Pynor and I explore spaces, even the more "messy" ones, where art and science meet. #nightscience #dayart

Oh no, Tom Stoppard has died. I discovered his plays as a teenager, skipping school to browse 2nd hand bookstores in Melbourne. I'd sit on the floor reading his plays, falling in love with his words and wit. #RIP www.theguardian.com/stage….

Philosophers are voyeurs. They spy on life, leering enviously at the scientists, artists, revolutionaries, and lovers, and feverishly speculating about the minutiae of their activities.
