馃彴 Chapters 2 & 3. The language is so good here - everything is just slightly off-true. Merricat and her rigidity & rituals, Uncle Julian and his desperation to remember every detail, Constance seeming less like a child and more like the matriarch. It was hard not to read ahead today.

Chapters 2 & 3 Huh. So Constance was acquitted despite several damning pieces of evidence. OTOH, I'm not convinced she's not covering for Merricat. And I guess Uncle Julian is actually alive.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle ch. 3: the part about Constance making rhubarb jam had me trying to remember how much of the rhubarb plant is poisonous.* So I tried Googling it and now Google thinks someone's been poisoned. 馃彴 *the leaves are definitely toxic, it turns out.
Screenshot of a Google search for "rhubarb poison." The first result says "Help is available. Speak with someone today" and then gives the number for a poison control hotline.

馃彴 So, to chapter 3 of We Have Always Lived in the Castle. More magical thinking from Merricat; it turns out that she's not just relying on the gates and chains for protection. I do wonder whether Constance knows? If she does, she's certainly not discouraging it.

馃彴 We have always lived in the castle: there is no way I read this only once as a kid. The D茅j脿 vu I鈥檓 having is intense and I鈥檓 only a few pages in. This is a profoundly weird place experience because I thought I had a handle on my obsessive reads but perhaps I do not.

I do take his point, though--if C was the poisoner, she wouldn't have put it in the sugar, plenty of which would be left after the meal. And she'd have used something that could have gotten into the food by mistake, like botulinum toxin-ridden jam in the pudding or foxglove leaves in the salad. 馃彴

(nb: I don't think Connie put the poison anywhere. But I do think it's hilarious that Julian is giving her notes on his own attempted murder.)

Chapter 3 is a RIDE. Does #Merricat bury talismans because she's a witch? Because she /thinks/ she's a witch? Or is she just whimsical?
