WIP snippet Ethan Vanek I awoke from this nightmare on the riverbank, head ringing, cheeks wet, while Corbin paced around me, nattering about a boat. “We can’t just steal a boat. But we need a boat. Should we take the horses? We need a cabin, but can’t be too big or it’ll use too much fuel,” and suchlike. Behind his voice, all I could hear were hooves on the ground: the Order, coming for us. All around me, the pop and scream of fire. Swinging my heavy head to the side, I saw Jean slumped against the horse, his hand so white against dark hide, his face gaunt again, all his blue fire spent. And I could now feel the cadre of knights bearing down on us. “Fuck the horse!” I shouted, levering myself upright, ringing ears and all. “Steal the fucking boat.” Corbin boggled at me. “We need to move. Now.” Scanning the riverside, I pointed with one trembling hand at a ramshackle river cruiser, likely big enough for three, but not, sadly, the warhorse. “That boat. Go.” Corbin ran and Jean followed with the warhorse to carry our packs. I stumbled in their wake, but fell halfway there and kept falling and falling into bottomless dark.
