My Friday afternoon hot take is that open access is well-intentioned but an enormous waste of $. Research articles aren’t written for general understanding. The $1000s spent on OA APCs could probably hire a science writer (or AI model) to draft a short lay summary.

The #IANLS has now its own #zenodo community where all presentations held at the #ianls25 can be published: zenodo.org/communities/ia… A small but hopefully important step towards more #openaccess in the field of #neolatin studies. @neolatin

"What sets Trump’s letter apart is not only the vulgarity of its imagery but the timing. It was allegedly written before Epstein’s first arrest in 2006, when the financier was still enjoying open access to America’s elite...circles — including Trump’s." open.substack.com/pub/aar….

Also, nobody is stopping me making my work open access and I fully intend to keep this up. I just worry about those who needed suasion suddenly fearing that they are just feeding the AI machine.

Many digital humanists will be articulating a complex, nuanced position that tries to balance support for open access with valid concern about AI exploitation of the commons. They're going to need a contrasting example of someone whose support for OA remains devoid of nuance — and šŸ™‹ā€ā™‚ļø I volunteer!

I don't know if I should be worried or proud that #Geriatrics is dead last on this list with 18.95% white men interested in our (pretty much open access if you are interested, fellowship slots not hard to come by) specialty šŸ˜‚ - we are definitely among the most diverse/"DEI"

Leishmaniasis is an important zoonotic disease. In this #openaccess paper, a new one-step multiplex qPCR assay could identify Leishmania martiniquensis and L. orientalis in clinical samples with 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity.🧪 Details: doi.org/10.1051/para...
Representative of optimization for the multiplex qPCR assay using primers-probe concentration for each target at (i) 250 nM primers/100 nM probe, (ii) 125 nM primers/50 nM probe, and (iii) 62.5 nM primers/25 nM probe and 102 fg/reaction for (A) L. martiniquensis, (B) L. orientalis, and (C) Crithidia sp. (CLA-KP1) as templates. The qPCR reactions were conducted according to the recommended thermal cycling protocol: 1 cycle of polymerase activation at 95 °C for 5 min, followed by 45 cycles of PCR at 95 °C for 15 s, and 60 °C for 1 min.

Everyone’s building AI—but how is it shaping us? A new EU law will open access for researchers to study AI’s real-world impact. But to make the most of it, we need the right methods. šŸ“„ Our survey paper is your guide to doing just that.

How do recommender systems shape our behavior? šŸ“„ We review 144 studies across domains, from social media to GenAI. 🧭 With the EU Digital Services Act, data access is now possible. Our survey offers a guide to studying recommender-driven risks. šŸ”— arxiv.org/abs/2407.01630

Anyway, stay tuned if you're interested in the full piece. It's going to be published open access (courtesy of the Swedish gov't agreement with key academic publishers), so everyone will be able to read the whole thing.
