Captured by YaLE Studio, this dramatic architectural close-up highlights the monumental hip-and-gable roof construction (irimoya-zukuri) of a Japanese Buddhist temple hall.
Captured by YaLE Studio, this dramatic architectural close-up highlights the monumental hip-and-gable roof construction (irimoya-zukuri) of a Japanese Buddhist temple hall. Rows of overlapping dark gray ceramic tiles (kawara)鈥攁lternating between flat concave pan tiles (flat-kawara) and semicircular convex cover tiles (hongawara)鈥攕weep down in tight, rhythmic parallel lines. Along the main hip ridge (muredori), ornate gilded ridge ornaments and crest tiles (mony艒-kawara) feature embossed heraldic three-leaf hollyhock crests (mitsu-aoba aoi kamon), shimmering in dull gold against the weathered charcoal clay. At the hip end, sculpted ornamental ridge-end tiles (oni-gawara) curl upward in majestic, scroll-like waves, studded with gilded floral rivets along the copper-bound border. Scattered pine needles gather in the grooves between the tiles, while the background dissolves into shadowy forest foliage.
Roof tile technology (kawarabuki) was introduced to Japan from China and Korea in the late 6th century during the Asuka period, transforming monumental architecture by offering fireproofing, durability, and monumental presence to Buddhist temples and castles. The inclusion of gilded crest tiles featuring the aoi kamon (hollyhock crest) denotes prestigious patronage historically associated with Tokugawa clan mausoleums or major Momoyama/Edo-period temple complexes, such as Nikk艒 T艒sh艒-g奴 or Z艒j艒-ji.
