Aaron Swartz, coding prodigy and hacktivist who helped develop RSS and was a co-founder of Reddit, died by suicide after facing $1 million in fines and 35 years in prison for felony charges, just for downloading pdfs of research papers with the intention of making them accessible to the public.

Being GenX/Millennial is such a trip. In our lifetimes, we saw people our age getting wild criminal penalties for pirating music and now have to sit and watch as companies gobble up our work with impunity.

Wow, some of you really are deliberately missing the point because you lack media literacy, so let me spell it out: actual theft of intellectual property by tech bros is bot treated with the same gravity by the state or the law that a man downloading taxpayer-funded research did.

We’re not here to re-litigate Aaron Swartz. If you’re here to point out that Aaron was a an actual criminal, I’m not going to debate you. But I do want to know why you’re not pursuing Altman et al with a proportional level of energy for the levels of intellectual property theft they have committed.

Wow, I just learned that there are people who think copyright is an unequivocal evil and artists should give all their labor away for free, which like, yeah, sure, maybe if we had UBI but we live in the world as it is, do YOU work for free? No? Cool. Don’t make me turn off the comments, ISTFG.

I feel like it's important to note that climate justice advocates understood the political nature of the issue and the political power of the industry. I'm all for people coming on board now but let's not pretend everyone was all in on technocratic and incremental approaches.

I wrote about how BAAJA, the federal permitting bill, might impact the buildout of power plants. I looked at the midwest transmission grid operator's updated interconnection queue, which MISO overhauled in 2024, as a leading indicator of what people are trying to build. TL;DR: It's mostly gas.

On September 30, the Senate released a draft of the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act of 2026 (BAAJA), a 417-page beast of a highly technical bill. BAAJA would overhaul, in deep and compl...
