Episodes from my recent work inbox, which now has a thread that’s basically an experimental novel made entirely by AI Scott Taylor is furious. You’re all committing crime. There were famous people involved at some point, but now Scott’s just laying waste.

We were across from the New Press stand at the Frankfurt Book Fair, & it reminded me just how much I love Studs Terkel. Working, The Good War, Division Street America, Hard Times—all full of fascinating stuff that would have been lost had Studs not been asking questions & listening to the answers.

Read Studs Terkel for the social/historical sweep, the infinite chorus of American speech, or for the occasional paragraph that feels ripped from Denis Johnson or Barry Hannah.

I grew up in a little town in Illinois, along the Kankakee River. I was an Eagle Scout. Although I was just a pint-size, I won three medals.
I liked ROTC. In 1936, the middle of the Depression, I worked my way through. One summer, while building a road, I saw an advertise-ment: Join the Navy. Go to Panama and Cuba on a one-month cruise.
All expenses paid.
They put us on an old battleship, the Arkansas, three hundred of us college kids. They put these sailor uniforms on us, with a blue band around our hat. We got ashore. We thought we'd do much better with the girls than enlisted men, but we were dismal failures. The regular crew members had told all the girls in Panama that the blue band meant we had gonorrhea.

Traveling to #ASAP2026 for a great-looking panel on Group Formations Saturday at 10:45 led by @elizabethalsop.bsky.social . I'll be doing a B-side to my book, talking about kinds of science-fictional collectivity and Adrian Tchaikovsky's *Alien Clay*.
Group formations panel details from program p 36, Saturday 10:45

For folks in the Claremont area, I’ve been typecast as “Drunk Villager 2” in a public reading of Warren Liu’s fabulous poetry collection, “First Contact.” Happening 10/29 at Scripps!

There's this moment in Yu Jiao li (17th C.) 玉嬌梨 (17th C.) where the hero meets a charming young man who is "as beautiful as a woman" (with a poem testifying to it) and, as a reader, you're thinking... are they going to...? Then suddenly it's sublimated into a marriage proposal for the guy's sister
