When Kennedy was shot poverty was much higher and women and black people weren't allowed to fully participate in the economy. So I'm not sure I'd agree it was better.

Seems like a red herring. Your point only matters if the people don't want this system. Considering the population and yet China still has lower homeless and poverty rates than America, and the government actually is investing in their people, unlike America, I'd say they're just fine.
