Sometimes the visual metaphors just arrive on their own (License plate number obfuscated by Google's magic eraser, image otherwise unaltered. Reposted to clarify since some of all y'all were way too excited to scream "AI SLOP"in the comments)

It's not out of print, the print version was always a limited edition. The ebook version is still available.

And that's time! Thank you everyone for the questions and for helping me pass an hour up here in the sky.

As I'm in the sky and I have time, for the next hour I am taking questions. ASK ME ANYTHING. I'll respond to questions with quoted posts. So: whaddya wanna ask?

For a little while there, some folks would mix up me and @hodgman.bsky.social. This was solved by me losing more hair and Hodgman not losing any hair at all as far as I can tell.

Are you regularly mistaken for anyone else?

Krissy and I usually go to one of three Mexican places near us when we go out on dates, so one of them.

Anything?! Hmm. What is your favorite restaurant for a date?

It's not resembling, it's in fact Barrington, with a couple of business names changed. I'm familiar with the general Chicagoland area, having gone to college there, and one of my favorite bands is from Barrington, so it was an easy choice to use it.

Starter Villain seems to be set in a town closely resembling Barrington IL. Am I correct or seriously delusional? Are you familiar with Barrington?

I'm never sad about killing of characters, indeed I'm generally positively gleeful about it and delight in how angry many of you will be about it. Because I'm a monster, you see.

Who's the character you were saddest about killing off?

It would probably have been Stephen King's Four Past Midnight, although I will note the blurb was credited to the newspaper and not to me. Still, it was the first time I'd seen my words in a published book. Which was pretty cool.

Which book did you pull off the shelf at Julie Shinkawa’s house to show me the book blurb you wrote when you were at the San Diego Union Tribune?

Which community? My writer community is up in arms about it all, which is to be expected. The community of my small, rural, mostly conservative town has been getting progressively more quiet about it all and a good number of the Trump flags in town have come down in the last few weeks, so.

How's your community reacting to the crazy?

It was in a boutique hotel in Melbourne, Australia and it had shut beef, cheddar, rocket, bacon, pineapple, beetroot and a fried egg on it. It looked so ridiculous I had to try it. After I had a bite I was genuinely angry I had to wait 45 years of my life to experience it.

What's the best cheeseburger you've ever had?

I know for a fact that there is another actual pilot deadheading on this plane (he boarded the plane just before me) so I'm going to let him be the one to land the plane, while I'm in my seat reviewing my life choices to that moment.

If the pilots suddenly vanished, would you volunteer to try and land the plane or would you let somebody else have a go?

I have a basic pedal board but I mostly just run the guitars through an audio interface and use virtual pedals/amps there. If I ever start gigging live (unlikely) I may revisit this.

We know you love guitars, how do you feel about guitar pedals?

In fact Amber reads Lock In and Head On. The gender of the main character of those books is not specified, and Audible decided to have two versions of the audio, one with Amber and the other with Wil. They both do a terrific job.

I loved Amber Benson's narration on "Constituent Service," might she one day be given the chance to do one of your novels? I know you like Wil Wheaton's readings, but spreading the love is a virtue.

Generally paper, it's ecologically more friendly. But I live somewhere plastic is still the rule.

Paper or Plastic?

I've been fortunate all my books have been well marketed (and all still in print). In SF I will once again wave the flag for Sheri Tepper's Grass and also its sort of sequel Raising the Stones, both of which are terrific, in differing ways.

What is one book (either yours or someone else’s) that didn’t get its audience when it came out and you would love to rescue from obscurity and promote the hell out of?
