But I’m honestly basing this on a couple conversations where I had to explain that BG3 the game is not a unique setting with its own canon so far as WOTC is concerned, it is something that occurs in a D&D place with D&D rules and where BG3 runs into 5e, 5e wins.

Yesterday, Wizards informed us that it doesn’t intend to voluntarily recognize the D&D or Studio X units of our union ahead of a vote. We remain committed to creating a workplace focused on wellness, transparency, and collaboration by winning our coming election.

My theory here, which may be totally wrong, is that BG3 hit big with, among others, a chunk of people who were not particularly invested in the D&D ecosystem and perhaps unfamiliar with the normal run of D&D tie-in novels/the fact gamers routinely handwave canon, rules, whatever during play.

...listen, my attraction to women is incredibly spotty, dependent on the stars and tides, and like, generally barely there but. Minthara Baenre Baldur's Gate Three could pull out my spine through my left nostril and I'd probably thank her.

It's no accident that D&D's most pervasive legacy in both game and pop culture is the concept of "leveling up": in this ethos, growth is linear, measurable, and comparable. So I appreciated @aarontram.bsky.social's linking of D&D to the "neoliberal mindset" and its requirement for mastery...
