Martina Arroyo, an American soprano who was part of the first generation of Black opera singers to achieve broader success, died last night in New York at the age of 90.

She first rose to prominence at the Zurich Opera between 1963 and 1965 and then became a leading soprano of the Metropolitan Opera from then until 1978. During that time, she also was a regular at opera houses around the world,

She sang recitals until as late as 1993 and sang in the world premiere of “African Oratorio” in South Africa in 1994. Her last years were spent teaching singing on the faculties of many universities in the U.S. and Europe. She received a Kennedy Center Honor on December 8, 2013.
