Two contrasting lakes in the volcanic landscape of Askja, in Iceland’s remote central highlands. In the foreground, Víti’s opaque, pale turquoise water fills a steep-sided crater. Its barren slopes are streaked with ochre, rust red and yellow, with exposed layers of jagged rock. A narrow ribbon of water descends through a cleft on the left. Tiny hikers on the crater rim give a sense of scale.

Beyond the rim stretches the much larger Öskjuvatn, its steel-blue surface beneath a wall of dark mountains patched with snow. Low cloud veils their upper slopes. The soft, milky colour of Víti contrasts with the cool blue of the distant lake and the warm earth tones of the crater.

Both lakes owe their origins to Askja’s powerful eruptions in 1875. Víti, whose name means “hell” in Icelandic, is an explosion crater formed when magma came into contact with water, triggering a violent steam-driven blast. Today, it holds geothermally warmed water, usually above 20°C. The mud on the crater floor can be much hotter. Beside it, Öskjuvatn fills a much larger depression created as the ground subsided above a magma chamber depleted by the eruptions. Water gradually filled this newly formed caldera, creating the vast lake seen beyond Víti’s rim.

Early morning at Iceland’s Blue Lagoon, where a ribbon of luminous, milky-blue water curves between banks of dark volcanic rock.
