Over 50% of American adults can't read above a 6th grade reading level, and this is an absolutely catastrophic civil rights crisis with implications for every facet of individual and collective life, including processing political statements by politicians, doctors, and so on
"The structure whose supports our elites are steadily kicking down is also the one that props up their own personal safety from disaster and political invulnerability to accountability. And all of this can go away." me in @bostonreview.bsky.social www.bostonreview.net/articles/a-y...
I hate talking about the ballroom bc I don't give a fuck about the White House and nothing there is sacred to me, but it feels obvious to me that allowing an authoritarian, who attempted a coup the last time he lost an election, to build a "top secret" military complex under the WH is a bad idea.
No powerful person in my lifetime has degraded American discourse and vilified, dehumanized and demonized those who disagree with him more than Donald Trump. He and his sycophants are blaming the left for the world they themselves built, and their complaints should not be given a moment's credence.
Listen I read a lot, and a lot of it is dull as hell, and I’ll tell you one thing I’ve learned: tedious writing is almost always a product of the writer conveying, rather than discovering. When a writer is discovering, or sharing discovery, no editor on earth can scrub out the vividity & joy.
This is remarkable in its "Nope, we're not doing this again" lighthearted dismissiveness. Between this and Hakeem Jeffries's statement that Karoline Leavitt can "get lost," today felt like a pivot to a flat refusal to cede even a single day of the news cycle to Trump's manifest bullshit.
while I understand folks getting their jokes off about dude bringing his cell phone to a bank robbery, I do want to emphasize that the police sought and received more phone data than just the robber's! geofence warrants are basically a digital dragnet! ballsandstrikes.org/scotus/chatr...
If you also suffer from seasonal allergies, I highly recommend air purifiers, having them on all the time, and buying separate ones for your bedroom, home office, and main living space. They are also good for reducing the risk of respiratory illnesses and dander from pets.
And this is the main thing I want to drive home. People aren’t shoplifting because it’s fun or their favorite podcaster is telling them to. They’re doing it because they’re broke or suffering from addiction more likely than not. This entire conversation is about a thing that’s largely not happening.
I had a person get v annoyed with me once because she was like "haha will you put this in a story" and without thinking I was like"no none of this is interesting enough" and she got mad, the notion of being made fun of in text was less aggravating than not being worthy of being made fun of in text
This is why the “people are shoplifting for fun/revenge against corporations” angle is bad all around. Actual things are happening to actual people, which is driving actual behavior, and it all gets subsumed into an internet culture war that contributes to the justifications for these policies.
When doing research for Burn It Down, my book on patterns of exploitation & abuse in entertainment, it was sobering--no, demoralizing--to read, every few years (for *decades*) a "Scott Rudin in a changed man" feature. Relying on Rudin & people who wanted to do business with him for that narrative.
What Georgetown Law Professor Randy Barnett is referencing here is Obama's 2012 statement that, if he had a son, he'd look like Trayvon Martin Feels absurd that a prestigious law prof is out here making posts with layers to the disgustingness!
Trump administration: Do not travel to Haiti or Syria, you could literally die Also the Trump administration, to the Supreme Court: Yea we're ending federal humanitarian protections & tryna send 356,000 people to Haiti and Syria right now. yesterday, if possible ballsandstrikes.org/scotus/supre...
This weekend, I thought about the time a stray bullet passed through my bedroom window when I was 15. I was a kid. I had a lot of feelings. But compared to some of these White House correspondents, I was a model of grace and maturity. That's not self-praise, just judgment.
So to sum it up, I as a Black Jew who is at risk during the ongoing Gestapo kidnappings in Maine: — am not allowed to criticize Janet Mills who refused to sign anti-ICE legislation — am not allowed to make assessments based on polling — am required to *canvas* for a low-chance candidate ok
For many years, I didn't really decorate my apartments because I figured I would move soon and didn't understand how much of an impact it would have. Now I get how putting up art and buying new pieces is important, because I plan to stay here for a while, and it has a huge impact on my daily life.
Under the 4th Amendment, cops are supposed to have probable cause, NOT search ppl's shit willy-nilly In Chatrie v. US, cops indiscriminately searched the phones of folks inside a circle w a diameter spanning 3 football fields, & developed suspicion along the way ballsandstrikes.org/scotus/chatr...
Let me clarify: No matter how smart you are, you will never, ever bring me around to your way of thinking if your way of thinking is “don’t bother pointing out when things said by elected officials don’t make any logical sense.” It’s no bother. I enjoy it. I could do it all day.
the Supreme Court has been wylin out on the shadow docket for a year straight and now Trump is basically arguing that lower courts are legally obligated to assume that those unexplained orders fully endorse his substantive arguments so... that's where we are now ballsandstrikes.org/scotus/supre...
